Ready, But Are We Willing for a Black President?
Newsweek ^ | May 26th, 2008 | Ellis Cose

Posted on 05/26/2008 5:51:38 PM PDT by The_Republican

Hillary Clinton was "too hard" and Barack Obama "too black." Thus proclaimed my new friend at Jillian's sports bar in Columbia, S.C., at what was to have been a celebration of John Edwards's victory in the primary there. So unless Edwards somehow secured the nomination, she was considering sitting out in November. Not that she had anything against Obama, she said, but the country was "not ready" for a black president. The woman, who'd been drinking heavily, then fell off her seat, ending our political discussion. A few days later, Edwards announced he was stepping aside "so that history can blaze its path."

What path history will blaze is unclear. That Obama seems poised to become the Democratic nominee is certainly evidence we've arrived at a redefining moment in this nation's evolution. But that's not to say race has ceased to be of consequence.

Hillary Clinton made that point in a widely criticized interview, boasting she had a stronger base of support than Obama among "hardworking Americans, white Americans." (She said she was misunderstood.) Clinton is not alone in suggesting that Obama has a blue-collar, white-voter problem. Frank Newport, editor in chief of the Gallup poll, agrees that Clinton does better among whites than Obama does—but more because of Clinton's appeal to white women than because Obama alienates blue-collar whites. "In general, Obama and Clinton perform … the same among non-Hispanic white men when pitted against presumptive Republican nominee John McCain," observes Newport.

For years, most Americans have told pollsters they were prepared to put race aside when voting for a president. Some 94 percent of Americans (up from 53 percent in 1967) tell Gallup they would vote for a black candidate.

Black is not the issue, if he were a conservative he would have my vote! It is idiology not the color of a man or womans skin, so the liberal progressives want you to think!

Indeed, the issue is the man, not the color, and Obama is the wrong man black, white, green or purple; just like Hillary is the wrong woman. Waaaaaaaaay too many people are supporting their candidacies just for their “firstness,” but if the candidates are unfit to govern, all that will do is set back their cause a generation.

My problem with Obama is what he thinks, not his skin color. The man is a stupid demagogue and that combination makes him very dangerous.

Right. If he were a real conservative that cares about America things would be different.

I can’t stand these race baiters; or baiters at all. They are pure rubbish.

Obama is half black and all racist:

Someone who disowns half of himself because of race is a racist.

why has no one asked St. Obama about his views on Reparations or is that racist too? I teach in an inner-city school and many of my students feel Obama is akin to the second coming. They have told me that he will send tanks into the hood to chase off all the evil white cops and hand out pot to everyone. He will also stroke each “Brother” a check for a million dollars and put honkie out in the field to teach him a lesson. Oh sure I try to explain why this will never happen but the magic R for racist word comes up because I must be racist if I don't see Mr. Obama as somewhere this side of Christ.

i think people should write his website and ask him what he thinks of the concept of reparations.
