Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has tapped a former Reagan administration official to head his campaigns search for a vice presidential nominee.
Senate Republican Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander (Tenn.) told The Hill that Arthur Culvahouse, who was Reagans White House counsel from March 1987 to January 1989, will be helping McCain vet candidates and develop a list.
Alexander and Culvahouse have known each other for decades and both have connections to former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker (R-Tenn.).
Its Arthur B. Culvahouse, thats whos heading the search, Alexander said.
Culvahouse refused to comment to The Hill, as did the McCain campaign.
John McCain is heading his search committee, and other than that we dont talk about it, said Charlie Black, a top McCain adviser.

Too bad he was so vilified that he isn't a viable candidate for POTUS
My opinion remains the same.....a Republican lawyer friend of the lightweight Lamar Alexander to head the veep search committee.
American Conservative ratings for 2007......Alexander 72 (below Hagel who is at 75.....and above McCain at 65.
We are so screwed.

FORGET IT! Fred, Lamar and “ACE” all cut from the same cloth.
I would rather McCain picked someone from Reagan’s first term. IMO RWR was getting some pretty poor advise in his second term & especially in the second half of his second term. Dunno if that included this guy.
Add Corker to the mix!
Its Arthur B. Culvahouse, thats whos heading the search, Alexander said.
Exactly!
I don’t know how the news could get any worse... But I am sure that it will...
It goes all the way back to Baker.
Romney moved down a notch in my book recently. He’s supporting Jim Ogonowski (couldn’t care less about being pro-life, wishy-washy on many conservative issues), doing a $1000 a plate fundraiser for the guy. Instead, Romney should have lent support to Jeff Beatty, also running for the Repub nomination to run against John F’n Kerry. Jeff IS a conservative FIRST and then a republican, strong on defense, strong pro-life. If Romney wanted to shore up his “conservative roots”, he sure picked the wrong horse in the MA Senate race.
If he picks some RINO, he’s toast.
I loved Mr. Marigold as Elder Statesman and Senator Baker was a hero of the Watergate Hearings but they are squarely of the moderate camp.
If you look at their records, there isn't much difference between Romney and Giuliani. They're both life long liberals and that makes both out of bounds for conservatives.
Anybody who believes, this is gonna make a dimes bit of difference, is a durn fool.
Please oh please, let him pick Phil Gramm.
It’s pretty amazing that Lamar passes as a conservative, isn’t it? But he does these days.
The truth, though, is that McCain picked him to do the job because he’s one of McCain’s Senate colleagues. These guys are incestuous.
I hope McCain picks a conservtive but those who nit pick
and find a speck and say seeeee.
These are the same ones who are voting third party and voting in Obama.
Please, oh please, Phil will turn 67 in a few weeks. He's a nice guy, but unfortunately comes off looking and talking like a 75 year-old hayhead.
Plus, he's been out of the public eye for too long. A double-geriatric ticket just won't cut the mustard.
Gramm has been an advisor to the McCain presidential campaign since 2007 and has been rumored to a running mate to McCain for 2008.
I doubt we have to worry too much about this aspect, though. I doubt if McCain would pick someone that close to him in age.....plus this rumor didn't create much of a stir whatsoever except maybe in Texas.
I would like to see Gramm in some appointive position, however. His conservative economic philosophy would be a much-needed addition to a McCain presidency.
I still revere him for the "pulling the cart/sitting in the cart" analogy.

So, he’s the same age as Fred Thompson.
