Surprise Me!
“My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. —Isaiah 55:8

When our family went out for an ice cream cone, my dad would ask my mother what flavor she’d like. Often she would reply, “Surprise me!” She told me she was rarely disappointed in his choice.

Do you like surprises? Would you ever dare say, “Surprise me!” to God? A lot of us are a little scared to do that. Yes, we have faith that God is good and that He loves us. Yet we’re afraid we won’t like what He chooses for us.

Throughout the Bible we read that God delights in doing the unexpected. Sometimes it’s folding back the waters for His people to cross a sea on dry ground (Ex. 14:21-22). Or forgiving and embracing those who repent of their sin (Ps. 130:1-4). Jesus’ time on earth was filled with amazing events that pointed people to His Father—He turned water into wine, calmed storms, healed the sick, and raised the dead.

What kind of God do we serve? One who is not confined by our finite imagination (Eph. 3:20). God’s thoughts and ways are not like ours (Isa. 55:8), and He wants to bless us with far more than a special flavor of ice cream. He delights in His children who trust Him and are willing to say, “Surprise me, Lord!”

O Lord, give me the grace to be
Content with what You give to me.
No! More than that, let me rejoice
In all You send me—it’s Your choice! —Anon.

Those who let God provide will always be satisfied.

G'evening, Sarge! Up a little early, eh?

G'evening, everyone!

Off to see the wizard?
I've actually had the pleasure of seeing "The Wizard of Oz" performed at Radio City Music Hall, and "Wicked" on Broadway (but not with the original stars). Oh, and I own the original ruby slippers. (Okay, *kidding* about that last one).

Used to watch it every year as a kid. And watched the tape quite a few times with my kids.

This is cool! I don’t follow these repeating threads but I seen that it had to do with the Wizard of Oz, and I had to click on it. I have probably seen the Wizrad of Oz at least 50 times. Currently, my grandkids are wearing it out every time they come over.

I heard an interesting story about the movie concerning the wizard. This was told to a group of us by a well known actor/writer in Hollywood. According to him the director had the costume department design the costume for the wizard. One of the items they decided on was the long frock coat the wizard was to wear. However the department did not have one on hand so they sent a couple of people out to search through the local used clothing shops to find one. They did find one and brought it back to the studio. When they started fitting it to the gentleman who was to play the wizard, he felt something in the inside pocket of the coat. Reaching in he found the ORIGINAL hand written manuscript of the story as written by Frank Baum. They contacted Frank's widow and discovered that she had indeed packed up most of Frank's clothes, including this coat, and donated it to the thrift shop.

Talk about a real spooky thing.

I read an interesting story about the Wizard of Oz. It has something to do with the silver standard around the time the book was written and Williams Jennings Bryan. In the book, the ruby slippers were actually silver. The word Oz is supposed to be the abbreviation for ounces, which was how gold and silver was weighed. The Wicked Witch of the East had to do with the big East corporate moguls who were pushing the silver idea to be used as currency, I think. The scare crow is supposed to be symbolic of agricultural interests. And so on, and so on.

If you want to read more, you can do a Google Search and type in the Wizard of Oz.

When I was in ROTC at the University of Illinois we used to take the train up to Chicago for the weekend. We’d get into Union Station and grab a cab to a place I dimly remember as being south of the Loop somewhere called Shorty’s Tap. It was run by a guy who had been one of Singer’s Midgets and had been in the movie, and ran the bar which was tailored to his size. Barstools stood about 2 feet off the ground, the bar was about knee high, and Shorty served 7 oz. pony’s as if they were full sized beers. It was always a fun place to start the weekend off at.
