Lot's of very glum faces among House GOP members this morning as they emerged from their weekly closed-door session. The political situation is not good, and they aren't even trying to deny it.
Rep. Tom Davis stomped on the concrete floor of the Capitol basement when asked by reporters about Republican fortunes at the moment.
"This is the floor," he said, by way of explanation. "We're below the floor."
Inside the meeting, Davis had just presented his colleagues with what he said was a 20-page memo outlining his prescription for a way out of this mess. He did not offer details to the press, yet did not spare the party and the president scathing criticism in his public comments.
"The president swallows the microphone every time he opens his mouth," Davis said.
He believes Bush's staunch opposition to the Democratic housing bill and the SCHIP bill, for example, is hurting rank and file. Look at yesterday's vote on the SPRO, where Republicans defied the president in droves. Lo and behold, the White House says today that it will not veto the bill.
Today is also the day when the House takes up the farm bill, which the president has promised to veto. It’s expected that this will become the second veto of Bush's administration to be overridden -- though the farm bill has more of a parochial dynamic than the national political one.

The primary reason to support Republicans at this point is because they would gladly preserve the semi-Socialist status quo, while the Democrats would move to impose the full-blown variety, given a chance. A sip of poison - or the full cup. Oh, and this year’s “Sip of Poison” Party candidate hates our guts, too. It does suck to be a Conservative right now....

This is the crowd that thought they could rid themselves of conservatives in 2006 and blame them for the losses.
They were too ignorant to see that it would only get worse. Once their constituents have lost trust that they are hearing them, they are dead meat. People don’t usually vote for people over and over again who work against their best interests.
The GOP learned NOTHING from Reagan. Now reap the whirlwind.
This is pure crap. Those bills have big price tags attached to them. This idiot, Davis is criticizing Bush for not spending more.
The big business special interest groups that control the GOP would never let that happen. The GOP is a tool used by big business to further its own interests.
It's a myth that the GOP ever represented conservative values -- not even during the Reagan years.
To preserve the myth, the GOP would occasionally through conservatives a bone, but only when the bone wouldn't hurt big business interests.
I think that Rush is right, as usual. The RNC Leadership (fine oxymoron, that) apparently needs to be Tasered back to reality, which I expect the shock of November will provide.
When your choice is between a RAT who is a RAT and a Pubbie who acts like a RAT why not vote for a RAT and get the real deal.

I miss Tom Delay. He would’nt stomp around like a two year old blaming his mistakes on his brother.

IMHO, it may not be possible for a conservative agenda to get anywhere near DC at this point. There are so many feeding at the trough, that they are able to confuse,interfere with, demoralize and obfuscate the agenda, the implementation of any agenda, that runs contrary to their interests. This is far bigger than just RINOS vs.Conservatives. This is Conservatives being shut out (or thrown out as in the case of Tom Delay) of DC entirely.

Inspiration wins primaries and elections. Fortunately it worked for Reagan and unfortunately it's working for Obama.
Bush isn't inspiring at all. Worse, he's an embarassment to the nation and the GOP. What comes out of his mouth is bilge. George Bush is the loser that should have been gotten rid of in 2004. He makes us, and every value we think important all look bad.
The best we can do, the very best, is to agree with the 70+% of the American people that think Bush stinks and find some way to completely break with him before the election. Oh sure, it would only be symbolic, but it would it prove that we aren't all blind. Instead, we're all going down with the ship.
The problem is that there are too many here that just can't admit the obvious -- that Bush is damn moron. And he's branding the rest of us morons through association.

Tom Davis, my rep, is a prime example of why the Republican Party finds itself in dire straits. He supported statehood for DC!
That's what it sounds like to me. God have mercy.
Really simple: Republicans should come out loudly and proudly for drilling and refining in our country. Secondly, they should come out loudly and proudly for denying benefits to anyone in this country illegally. If you make these 2 simple points the focus of your platform and unflinchingly deliver this message to the American people, you will win.
