Police said four white students at Central York Middle School used racial slurs and harrassed a black student while they rode home on a school bus Friday afternoon.
Springettsbury Township Police were called to the school Monday morning to investigate a report of harrassment on the bus.
The 13-year old white boys "verbally and physically harrassed and intimidated" a 13-year old black boy, using racial slurs as the bus took the students home, police said.
Julie Randall Romig, spokeswoman for the Central York School District, said the district was notified of the harrassment. She declined to discuss details of what happened.
"The Central York School District does not tolerate any form of harrassment or intimidation, including those forms that are racially or ethnically motivated," Romig said, reading a statement. "The district has policies and procedures outlined in its student code of conduct that clearly outline this behavior as unacceptable and subject to discipline."
The district addressed the situation in accordance with policy and the student code of conduct and called police, according to the statement.
The four students were identified and disciplined, Romig said. The district does not discuss disciplinary action taken against students.
Police released a statement that said the department "is appalled at the fact that such abhorrent activity still permeates our commmunity in the 21st Century."
Police are still investigating.
explain why it is a horrible idea....if all schools were segregated and the gov’t gave all schools equal funding then what would be the problem...??...
Yeah, racism is bad. But is it really worth a news story and an investigation because some 13 year old boys might have called somebody a name??
“On a lighter note, I have yet to figure out what Cracker is supposed to mean. As derogatory terms go, that one is kind of weak.”
I’ve heard it comes from miners, who were coal crackers.
I can't disagree more strongly. I actually believe that that quaint notion that all men ARE created equal. That we each ought to have the freedom to live and work wherever we are able.
The name calling and other obnoxious behavior is cultural, not racial in origin. Do not lump all blacks together in that behavior. That is the basis of racism and prejudice; the judgment of people based on group, rather than individual, characteristics.
Something similar happens because of comments like yours. Those comments are singled out to portray all conservatives as racist, based on the opinions of a few. I think you are doing a disservice to conservatism.
Exactly black boy should have whipped one of their butts and the name calling would stop. Back before schools and government wussified our boys you could stand up to a bully and things corrected themselves. Now if you stand up for yourself you go to detention or jail when you are the victim.
In the Deep South, Oxen cart drivers crack the whip to make the oxen move on.
Segregate the white people from the hip hop people? That’s a shame really. MLK must rolling over in his grave to think that this is still going on.
This is what happens when the black community is influenced by Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Rev. Wright.
“Cracker” derives from slave master cracking the whip on slaves in the ante-bellum south.
See 68.
so in your world it is better to FORCE all races to live together...correct..??..even if they do not wish to....kind of like forcing different types of animals to live together...then they attack and maim or kill each other similar to what we are doing today due to forced de-segregation....at what point do we change the rules once we recognize something isn’t working...??...or do we just continue onward and look away....which seems to be the way of america anymore...so many people afraid to offend someone....
It’s turning into the early 90’s all over again.
Everything is about race now.. Weird.
I work in an area where nobody is for sure that I’m there. And I heard 2 blacks come in and comment on all the ‘crackers’ that work there.
They didn’t know I could hear them.
This is, I imagine, not uncommon.
You never know...
‘Cracker derives from slave master cracking the whip on slaves in the ante-bellum south.’
Having lived in the antebellum South my entire life, I can assure you that is nonsense. It’s likely origins are from “corn crackers” (poor whites who ground their own corn) or drivers of mule teams in the south.
I don't believe that forcing people to live together is any better than forcing them to live apart. Comes back to that "freedom" thing, another quaint notion.
Having lived in the south my whole life and can trace generations moving from yankee land to Alabama/Mississippi back to the 1830’s can say it is.
The cracking of the whip. why would blacks or whites for that matter find corn crackers as derogatory? I don’t. Of course I do not find “cracker” in today’s terms offensive because I don’t really care.
humans are animals...just so happens we are at the top of the food chain....and its our society today that has caused me to be so negative about people today....each and everyone of us is only out for number one...just look around you...if you yourself aren’t then you are the exception...
I will also add that if you will notice the only places that have racial problems for the most part are areas that have had influences from the north. In areas of the south like Ala, Ms, Tn that are still old fashioned where blacks and whites have lived side by side before and after the civil war without “race-baiters” influencing anything you see less problems. People just get along and accept one another for the most part. Go to an area like Atlanta and other southern areas where you see massive media influence and a lot of carpet baggers and white guilt promoters you have all these issues ranging from actual racial problems to chicken_hit stuff that just stirs the pot.
“The cracking of the whip. why would blacks or whites for that matter find corn crackers as derogatory? I dont. Of course I do not find cracker in todays terms offensive because I dont really care.”
It was actually a slur used by whites against other poor whites. Blacks picked up on this. “Corn crackers” was indicative of a lower social class.
You are right about the relative lack of racial strife down here. Oh, people gripe about this or that but after all is said and done, there is a mutual respect.
My daughter has to endure the blacks vocal racist attacks every day she rides the bus. It would take more than an act of Congress to get the school bus drivers and administration to act upon and correct the racist black kids.
My God! Get that girl off that bus. No child should take abuse like that. Drive her or homeschool her.
