If you think four years of Hilabama will get us another Reagan, then you better think again

One of the thing I keep reading here on Free Republic is that a lot of conservatives are under the belief that if we get fours of Senator Obama or Senator Clinton that the American public would become so shocked and disgusted that they will be tripping over themselves in 2012 to elect a "true conservative" candidate. I have some issues with Senator McCain, however that's not the point here.

Lets look at the last 40 years. Only two presidential incumbents have lost their bid for re-election excluding President Ford. Ford was a special case, serving out the remainder of President Nixon's term. Even if you consider the 1976 election, the 1976 election came down to single county in Ohio despite all of the Ford's baggage. In fact we had two elections, where one of the candidate, the Vice-President, won extending the term of a two-term President (1988) and another election (2000) where another candidate, the Vice-President lost getting the majority of the popular vote, almost extended the term of the President. So it isn't easy unseating the President.

In 1992, the incumbent lost because the conservative vote was split.

Let's look at the 1980. In hindsight, it appears that Reagan blew out Carter. Governor Reagan soundly defeated President Carter in electoral college vote, however Reagan only receive 52% of the popular vote; Carter got 40%. Obviously the liberal vote was split by Congressman John Anderson. But what some people don't remember is that despite of Iran, the Soviets invasion of Afghanistan, stagflation, double digit interest rates, Billy Carter's Libyan fiasco, and the split at the democratic convention; the 1980 election was not decided until the final weekend before the election.

Some people say we can survive 4 years of Hilabama because we "survived" four years of Carter and 8 years of Bill Clinton. Four years of Carter got us 29 years of an Islamic Republic in Iran and 8 years of Clinton gave us the rise of Al Qaeda.

If Hilabama is elected, they will go to great lengths ensuring that they will never be out of power. They will leave no dime unspent in their pursuit of unabated democrat rule.

Your vote is your business. Just get all of the facts and be prepared to be disappointed.

If we got through four years of Carter...we will survive four years of Barry. It won’t be fun, but we will do it.
::::::
At least Carter wore a uniform in the Navy. The only uniform or military knowledge this charlatan empty suit has, comes from Armani. The radical lib candidates, BOTH of them, have no concept of the military, THEY HATE IT, and would do everything in their power to tear it down, very much like Billary and Carter did, but worse. Our enemies are in heaven at the though of one of these two crank Marxists getting into the White House. The thought is beyond frigthening.

Man, I really do enjoy your posts. I would like, very much, to agree with you on this, but I can’t.

First of all, times are way different now. Tradition and respect are lost artifacts of our culture and politics.

Secondly, Congress, specifically the Senate, plays a huge role in blocking a renegade POTUS, or one they see as a renegade, like 43. Remember, there were many backstage deals struck to get his noms passed, do you think Barry can muster that much support? In the beginning he may, after he gets rolling, though, he’ll be hated.

Everything McManiac does, will be pinned to Conservatism, and forever will we hear...hey McCain was a Conservative, and he opened the borders, raised taxes, allowed abortions, etc. And if anyone thinks he will appoint a Roberts or Scalia, think again, he’ll cave (reach across the aisle) in a NY second.

Not in my name. Not this time. Not ever again.

I’m pluggin my nose and working hard for Conservatives in Congress, I wrote off POTUS when Fred and Duncan left us.

People really do get the government they deserve.

God Save America.

I guess I am not a cynic.

I believe God is in control and all the terrible predictions put forth on this forum will not happen just because John McCain is president.

There is a season for all things....The United States stands for the right things, God has not abandoned us yet.If we give up,wave the white flag when life gets hard then God should cast us aside.

Pray for our brave warriors as they fight to keep us free.

As Rush has said, if the country’s going to be destroyed in any case, might as well let the other party be the one to do it. No Juan McAmnesty ever.

You are not wrong about the basis of FDR’s success.

Honestly though...is there enough difference between Dems and Reps today to matter?

I am comming around to the view that Gingrich’s “Contact With America” was the GOP’s last hurrah. When the GOP in ‘95 failed to do as they promised, instead taking away the earmarks from the party of spending and making it their own..

The two-party system is mostly over.

A good example is gas prices...there’s no shortage...the price increases are a tax increase that neither party had the courage to pass... so they are just printing more money.

The two party system is spent.

Thanks for a reasonable post. I don’t like McCain, but I’ll vote for him because he won’t surrender in Iraq. For all the soldiers who sacrificed so much, I’ll do my best to ensure it was not in vain.

Now McCain says he will appoint justices like Alito, but in January he was singing a different tune.

Re: Fund and McCain [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

Yes, the issue is not if McCain helped with Alito but if McCain would nominate an Alito. For what it’s worth, I’ve been told the same thing John F. reported — that at a private meeting McCain said he would appoint justices like Roberts, but not like Alito — who wears his conservatism on his sleeve. The report of the comment — first in D.C. conservative circles and now in the WSJ — has set off alarm bells with conservatives who’ve worked on the judicial issues, for obvious reasons. We already got Alito despite a president who wanted to go in another direction. This time, folks feel like they’re being warned beforehand.

Why should we believe he changed his mind since January?

I truly believe that my votes are a waste of time.
I never got the chance to vote for who I supported
Other people picked the candidates for me.

I voted for McCain in the primary
But if he picks someone like lindsey graham for his vp,
I will not vote for them.

I also believe that if hillary or hussein take the presidency, there won't even be elections any more.
(not really)
The big charade will be over anyways, & I can stop pretending

Sure try and scare the Conservatives into voting for Mr.Liberal John McCain.

Somehow I don’t think that’s going to work.

The Republican Party has played that game one time too many.his time people are not falling for it.

I tire of the mantra concerning the SCOTUS appointments.

McCain will not be able to appoint conservatives to the bench.

First if he did they would overturn McCain/Feingold.

Second there will be more dems in congress preventing this.

His policy concerning amnesty will destroy our country, our party, and the conservative movement

I know for most it is difficult, but McCain will be hatd for conservatives to stop, not true if it is a dem...

You are spot on. I agree 100% and as much as I have to swallow hard to vote for McCain, I will do so. I will not vote third party, write in or stay home. I will pull as many family and friends as I can to the voting booth because a democrat in the whitehouse may very well mean a nuke weapon exploding on our soil.

“And, if McCain is elected and has a majority democrat Congress how will it be different?”

He won’t nominate a Justice Ginsberg.”

Really?

In 1993, McCain voted to confirm the pro-abortion, liberal, bench activist, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. But when Bush set out to restore constitutionalism, McCain formed the Gang of 14, seven senators from each party.

All agreed to vote to block the GOP Senate from invoking the “nuclear option”—i.e., empowering the GOP to break a filibuster of judicial nominees by majority vote—unless the seven Democrats agreed

Right on! It distresses me to no end to discover that out of all the people in politics from the 50 states the two major parties give us 3 disasters. What a huge disappointment in the party system and politics in general. And I’m not alone.

One rather large problem with hoping that four years of either pile of Democrat is going to get us a new Reagan: Where’s the new Reagan? I mean, right now? The conservatives in ’76 didn't have to ask themselves where their next guy was coming from. They knew where their next guy was coming from. Reagan was there. He almost chased Jerry Ford down for the nomination. Where’s your conservative guy that’s earned the right to be the consensus choice for ’12? (For that matter, where’s the Republican, conservative or not, who got anywhere near chasing McCain down for the nomination?)

tire of the mantra concerning the SCOTUS appointments.

I tire of your posts of doom and gloom for our country but you have the absolute freedom to post your thoughts and feelings.

John McCain will be a good president,he may not be the best president we have had but he will not harm or troops or our country's security.

If your intent here is to depress everyone, it isn't working.
