If you think four years of Hilabama will get us another Reagan, then you better think again

One of the thing I keep reading here on Free Republic is that a lot of conservatives are under the belief that if we get fours of Senator Obama or Senator Clinton that the American public would become so shocked and disgusted that they will be tripping over themselves in 2012 to elect a "true conservative" candidate. I have some issues with Senator McCain, however that's not the point here.

Lets look at the last 40 years. Only two presidential incumbents have lost their bid for re-election excluding President Ford. Ford was a special case, serving out the remainder of President Nixon's term. Even if you consider the 1976 election, the 1976 election came down to single county in Ohio despite all of the Ford's baggage. In fact we had two elections, where one of the candidate, the Vice-President, won extending the term of a two-term President (1988) and another election (2000) where another candidate, the Vice-President lost getting the majority of the popular vote, almost extended the term of the President. So it isn't easy unseating the President.

In 1992, the incumbent lost because the conservative vote was split.

Let's look at the 1980. In hindsight, it appears that Reagan blew out Carter. Governor Reagan soundly defeated President Carter in electoral college vote, however Reagan only receive 52% of the popular vote; Carter got 40%. Obviously the liberal vote was split by Congressman John Anderson. But what some people don't remember is that despite of Iran, the Soviets invasion of Afghanistan, stagflation, double digit interest rates, Billy Carter's Libyan fiasco, and the split at the democratic convention; the 1980 election was not decided until the final weekend before the election.

Some people say we can survive 4 years of Hilabama because we "survived" four years of Carter and 8 years of Bill Clinton. Four years of Carter got us 29 years of an Islamic Republic in Iran and 8 years of Clinton gave us the rise of Al Qaeda.

If Hilabama is elected, they will go to great lengths ensuring that they will never be out of power. They will leave no dime unspent in their pursuit of unabated democrat rule.

Your vote is your business. Just get all of the facts and be prepared to be disappointed.

I agree 100%. What Obama is pushing is basically the no-growth high-tax and high-regulation state as seen in Western Europe for decades. With a Democrat congress he is likely to get it. If that happens, prepare for many years of "malaise", and Lord help poorer Americans.

I am well aware of McCain's deep weaknesses, but I am voting for him and I hope others do, too.

Sorry, I’m gonna gamble that you are wrong, I will not vote for McCain...he’s put his thumb in my eye too many times.

Sorry McCain has lied, lied, and lied, to the Republican Party. He nearly jumped parties twice. At what point do you say I have had enough?

I have to be able to put my head on the pillow at night.

Go vote for McCain, just remember, he’s a rightwing Democrat. Like Liberman. He will abandon his stance on abortion in a heartbeat.

In 1993, McCain voted to confirm the pro-abortion liberal Ruth Bader Ginsburg. But when Bush set out to restore constitutionalism, McCain formed the Gang of 14, seven senators from each party. All agreed to vote to block the GOP Senate from invoking the “nuclear option”—i.e., empowering the GOP to break a filibuster of judicial nominees by majority vote—unless the seven Democrats agreed. Yeah, sounds like he is a BIG supporter of Conservative judges alright!

He also voted for Souter, who with Ginsburg supported his McCain/Feingold supporession of free speech. Who was apposed to it? The Conservative judges. Yeah he'll appoint them!

And I also stand with John Funds assertion on what he said about Alito, that he might not appoint a judge like Sam Alito who "wore his conservatism on his sleeve."

The problem with your argument is that you believe McCain supports judges that are Conservatives, yet he hates Conservitives! He may have voted for them, but that isn't proof he will nominate them in the future!

With what I just heard from Mark Levin on the radio about McQueeg's new "Climate Change" government control program I feel sorry for the rest of the appeasers that are bending over backwards making excuses for him. He is just as bad, or worse, as either of the other two possibles.

Darth Vader and the Empire have won.

Your argument is very tenuous. Lots of Senators confirmed both Ginsburg and Souter. So what? But it comes down to is this... you have your opinions — which I respect. And I have mine.

Yeah, I’m sure.

How sure were you yesterday that he wouldn't be elected? Truth now, not hindsight.

Honestly, about 95%. It may be because I live in Michigan...the economy is terrible here. I have a McCain bumper sticker on my car.....over the last month I’ve seen only one other. Obama stickers and signs were everywhere.

The good news is......Barry can’t possibly deliever all the Left expects....he is bound to fail in their eyes.
