Too Late to the Duck Hunt: A Farewell to Hillary
The Washington Post ^ | May 9, 2008 | Charles Krauthammer

Posted on 05/08/2008 6:19:49 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

By the time Hillary Clinton figured out how to beat Barack Obama, it was too late. When she began the race in 2007 thinking she was in for a coronation, she claimed the center in order to position herself for the real fight, the general election. She simply assumed the party activists and loony left would fall in behind her.

However, as Obama began to rise, powered by the party's Net-roots activists, she scurried left, particularly with her progressively more explicit renunciation of the Iraq war. It was a fool's errand. She would never be able to erase the stain of her original war vote and she remained unwilling to do an abject John Edwards self-flagellating recantation. It took her weeks even to approximate the apology the left was looking for, and by then it was far too late. The party's activist wing was by then unbreakably betrothed to Obama.

But going left proved disastrous for Clinton. It abolished all significant policy differences between her and Obama, the National Journal's 2007 most liberal senator. On health care, for example, her attempts to turn a minor difference in the definition of universality into a major assault on Obama fell flat. With no important policy differences separating them, the contest became one of character and personality. Matched against this elegant, intellectually nimble, hugely talented newcomer, she had no chance of winning that contest.

She tried everything. Her charges that he was a man of nothing but words came off as a petulant, envious attack on eloquence. The power to inspire may not be sufficient to qualify for the presidency, but it is hardly a liability.

Dr. Krauthammer is right, but she isn't done yet, IMO.

She ain't gonna quit.

The Clinton, Inc., objective now becomes to inflict so much damage on Obama that he is annihilated in November.

Then the field will be clear for 2012.

We'll have Hillary to kick around til November. Either as Obama's Veep or as the gal who wants voters to put the first black American in the White House.

“We’ll have Hillary to kick around til November. Either as Obama’s Veep or as the gal who wants voters to put the first black American in the White House. “

It will be the latter. Obama will never make Hillary his Veep. Not in a million years. After enduring the Clintons’ dirty tricks all this time, he’ll know better than to bring Bill and Hillary into the White House with him (where they would undoutedly scheme to promote themselves at Obama’s expense at every opportunity).

How does that clear the field for 2012? I understand that she can inflict damage on Obama, and then McCain may be elected. But how does that make Hillary a front runner for 2012? After all that has happened in the campaign, will Democrats rally around Hillary in 2012 if she tries again? Lots of Dems. are sick of the Clintons, and other candidates will be running in the 2012 primaries, I’m sure.

Clinton is staying in to collect as much money as she can. She is also hoping that if Obama gets elected, she will be appointed to some important cabinet position to set her up for 2012. But the interesting thing to watch..........and I would love to be a fly on the wall......is her being beaten by the likes of Obama. Then watch Obama fall like a ton of bricks to the likes of McCain. I don’t remember having three of the biggest light weights running for President. There has to be someone else making the decisions for this country. Wouldn’t it be interesting to find out who?

>How does that clear the field for 2012?

It doesn’t.
That is just some type of semi wishful dreaming, but politics is played in the real and now.

Nobody blows tens of millions and a priceless, likely one in a million opportunity to become president just to “position” oneself for a run years later to do the same thing all over again.

Lots of Dems. are sick of the Clintons,

That seems to be the primary theme of this presidential election year. The famed Clinton juggernaut seems to have ground to a halt, in spite of - or because of - all the dirt they have on their nearest and dearest Democratic friends. They still have financial sources, but nothing like when Billy Bill was running - ol' Hillary's even raiding her own piggy bank now. Hillary was only effective when kept behind the curtains, because on her own she scares small children.
