Romney adds names every week if he is a member of this church. You don't do this to other people.I am a very open minded person in faith but this crosses a line.

Hierachial style of chruch government - both Catholics and Mormons are heavy on the Church and the use of ritual AFAIK.

Baptism for the dead gives the mormons a chance to glory in the belief that the person may have died a Catholic but “now he’s a mormon.”
I’ll pass.

“The Vatican needs to look at its own scriptures and doctrine for assurance that such things are meaningless to God.”
Meanlingless to God, yes, but to the families of the deceased there is a line of respect. In genealogy, a rule of thumb is 100 years from date of birth before releasing records. The US Census waits 70 years.
As far as the posthumus baptisms, the Catholic church has an obligation to refrain from appearance of scandal. A Catholic giving records for Mormon baptisms is like a Catholic attending a gay wedding. It suggests an approval that is not there.

Well, I just now finished baptizing you over the internet.
But, I am not going to tell you what religion it’s for. Let me know how it works out.
See how dumb it sounds....

To be honest who cares what the LDS does in this regard. It has the same overall spiritual effect as the Guinea Pig Jinx or Lucky Shoelaces.

Why do you care who's on the list? If you don't think their religion is worth a dam, then how is it you think it's going to hurt anyone if the mormons baptise everyone post-mortem-en-absentia?

If baptism is meaningless, then why did Jesus Christ seek out John the Baptist? Why was Jesus filled with the Holy Spirit after that baptism?

I took care of the computers used for genealogy research when I lived in San Diego. Roughly 80% of the users of the LDS genealogy libraries are not members of the church. The resources are available to everyone researching family history. I tracked down over 4,000 family members dating back to the early 1400's. Some of those names have been submitted for ordinances at the temple. Many still need additional research to validate details. The early individual research was done on home computers using applications such as Personal Ancestral File. At the current time, the church is rolling out an internet based system. Research can be done online instead of running off to the local library to fiddle with CDROMs. Information can be conveniently printed from the browser. From the brief description I heard last Fall, there will be userid/passwords issued to associate you with a user account that also has your family records associated (to the extent that they have been entered).
The Catholic church records have been particularly reliable and accurate input to the database. That has made family history research much easier for families with a long history of membership in the Catholic church. The policy change is going to hurt Catholic families doing research. Perhaps the Vatican will make an effort to provide a suitable replacement.

I agree with you about the LDS genealogy records, they are great for research. As far as the baptism after death deal, hey...go ahead and pour out the water, I don’t think it changes a thing. Dead is dead and it’s to late for do overs. That is my belief.

Thing is, I can't see why this matters. If the LDS is wrong, their baptisms have no effect; and it is definitely the case that the Catholic Church believes that it has no effect.
I would be more worried about everyone on the list who is alive, being relentlessly hounded :-)
