OTTAWA -- Employees at Dell Canada's Ottawa operation learned Wednesday morning that the customer contact centre - once one of the city's fastest growing employers - will close its doors.
More than 1,100 employees will lose their jobs.
Only about 100 of the site's employees walked out of the morning's meeting with a job. They will remain in Ottawa to support the computer maker's sales division.
"It's surreal, but there have been signs along the way," said one employee, who did not want to give his name.
Some of the job cuts are immediate, while others will be phased out by July.
Workers are being offered separation packages or, if possible, other positions within Dell. Some said they were told they would lose their separation packages if they spoke to the media.
"It's tough to get negative comments from anybody because we were all treated very well," said one employee, who declined to give his name. "It really comes down to cost and not performance."
As recently as November 2006, Dell founder and chief executive Michael Dell was announcing plans to double the size of the Ottawa facility and hire as many as 1,200 more staff. But the company soon saw sales decline because of increased competition from other manufacturers such as Hewlett-Packard and a slumping market for small computers.
Its Mac’s fault.
As a former VAR (Value-Added Reseller: A local, independent, specialty computer store) employee, I have to admit to a bit of “schadenfreud” at Dell’s fiscal misfortunes of late.
Has Dell ever conducted a study of how many customers buy Dell again after they have a call routed to Bangalore hell?
BUMP!

Dell=Hell
I wonder what’s going on with Dell. I’d read, probably on some thread here, that they would be closing their customer service centers in India and returning those to the US or Canada. But it wouldn’t make sense along with this news.
Several years ago I was talking to a tech, who told me because of the India mess he always told people to steer clear of Dell.
I know I always inquire if a support center is in India. If it is, I won’t buy the product. The vast majority of India calls I have had, have turned up total messes.
It’s about time management realized that India cheap is not necessarily cheap in the long run.
