Disney reveals 3D movie line-up

WALL*E will be the next release from Pixar

Disney and Pixar are to make eight new 3D animated films over the next four years, Walt Disney has announced.

The studio was showcasing the next 12 animated films it will release between now and 2012 in the US.

With the exception of robot love story WALL*E - which opens in June - and the hand-drawn Princess and the Frog, the movies will all be in digital 3D.

They include newly converted 3D versions of the hit movies Toy Story and Toy Story 2, out in 2009 and 2010.

"We're excited to be pushing the boundaries of 3D and computer technology to tell our stories in the best possible way," said John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios.

The line-up from Walt Disney Animation Studios includes Bolt, the story of an actor dog who believes he has super powers; Rapunzel, a retelling of the fairy tale; and the modern-day fantasy King of the Elves.

DISNEY FILMS

All the films released in 3D will also be available in a 2D format.

Digital 3D still requires film-goers to wear glasses, but the left-and right eye images are finely calibrated so that most viewers experience no headache or eyestrain.

There are currently around 50 cinemas capable of showing the 3D pictures in the UK, but that number is expected to rise.

Up, about an elderly widower who embarks on a South American adventure, will be the first 3D effort from Pixar when it opens in 2009.

Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack have returned to voice Toy Story 3, which is due to hit screens in June 2010.

Pixar's other upcoming releases include Newt, a love story involving the last two blue-footed newts alive, Scottish fantasy The Bear and the Bow, and Cars 2 in the summer of 2012.

Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, said: "We couldn't be more proud and excited about our upcoming line-up of feature projects.

"With so many great films literally on the drawing boards and computer screens, we felt that now was the perfect time to give moviegoers all over the world an update on the state of our art... this is as exciting a time as any in our history."

Figures they're re-releasing old films. Disney has not been big on original ideas for years.

My wife and I saw Polar Express in the Palm Springs IMAX shortly after it came out a few years back. It was the best 3-D experience either of us have had. It was simply amazing.

The story wasn’t as strong as I would have liked, but it was an overall positive experince. The graphics were incredible.

I saw Beowulf in 3D. Like you said, the story wasn’t all that great, but I thought the effects were spectacular.

Until viewers don’t have to wear extra things 3D will be a silly gadget. And hopefully they won’t go all “Metalstorm” because of the 3D, that whole movie existed only for half a dozen “ooh it’s 3D” scenes.

3D comes and goes in popularity. This is probably a mistake on Disney’s part to make everything 3D.

There are techniques to get a 3d image without requiring glasses. My favorite is this one that works across a wide field of view, but requires 16 projectors to display all the angles (and 16 cameras to capture them.

The real reason why 3D is a silly gadget is that we don't really need 3D to tell a story like we need sound, color, and a clear picture. Look at how 3D is represented in science fiction. Images hover in mid-air rather than being offset from a screen. People are immersed in rooms that project and re-create entire scenes. The real reason why a 3D movie is dumb is because the movie experience is about as good as you can get with a bunch of stationary people watching something.

I wish they’d make a sequel to The Incredibles!

Pixar owes me big time.

I have watched Monsters Inc. more times than any human should ever have to, due to it being my little one's favorite thing on the planet.

They should send me stock or something.

Amen to that! If you saw the DVD there were cut scenes included. There is one scene (excuse my shaky memory) where Mrs. Incredible overhears a neighbor trash talking stay-at-home moms during a cookout. She confronts them and basically gives them an earful. Loved it.

Me too! I would much rather see a sequel to that than Cars.

Found it! Well, the dialog anyway.

Commodities broker: Throw away my prime years trailing after a bunch of snotty brats? No thank you! Hello! I want to do something with my life.

Helen (approaching, baby in arms): Wait a minute. You consider raising a family nothing?

Commodities broker: Well, it’s fine if you’re not suited for more substantial things.

Helen: Do you have any idea how much suffering would fail to take root if people were just good parents? What’s more important than that? A job saving lives? What about risking my life, confronting evil on a daily basis so people like you can sleep in safety and security? Would you consider that kind of job “substantial”? That’s the kind of job I gave up for my new job raising a family, and nobody is going to tell me that it’s less important!

The sixteen-projectors thing would be awkward, but with digitally animated movies like the ones in question here, having sixteen cameras wouldn’t be an issue.

The interesting thing is that some big blockbuster, special-effects-heavy films, especially Lord of the Rings, couldn’t have been made in 3D because part of the visual effects involves playing tricks with perspective since the movie screen is 2D and the viewer has no sense of depth.

I hesitate with the Incredibles because I could see the suits making it into a whole PC vision crap-O-la fest.

(ie PC stereotype of son being not so good in school, or father being a brainless joker etc.)

there was a fake Incredibles II posted on the net which was more or less a dark family PC oriented take down of the happy story.

Go to a NASCAR race and find the Texas Instruments DLP trailer. You can go inside to see a very good 3D movie and keep the glasses!
