Absolut vodka pulls ad showing California in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The distillers of Sweden's Absolut vodka have withdrawn an advertisement run in Mexico that angered many U.S. citizens by idealizing an early 19th century map showing chunks of the United States as Mexican. ADVERTISEMENT

The billboard ad has the slogan "In an Absolut World" slapped over a pre-1848 map showing California, Arizona and other U.S. states as Mexican territory. Those states were carved out of what had been Mexican lands until that year.

Although it was not shown in the United States, U.S. media outlets picked up on the ad, and after a barrage of complaints, Absolut's maker said on Sunday the ad campaign would cease.

Defending the campaign last week, Absolut maker Vin & Spirit said the ad was created "with a Mexican sensibility" and was not meant for the U.S. market.

"In no way was this meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues," a spokeswoman wrote on Absolut's Web site.

"Instead, it hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal," she wrote.

This is the predictable result of people in Absolut’s marketing department consuming to much of their own product.

Since 1995.

They have never been a part of NATO. Sold advanced technology to the USSR in the 1980s, Harbored US draft dodgers (including girls soccer coach Sylvester Stallone) during the Viet Nam War and sold strategic minerals to the Nazis during WWII.

Sweden has never been what you would call a friend or ally of the US. We can go without their vodka.

nor does it advocate an altering of borders...

That’s a flat out effin lie. You don’t publish something like that without appealing to the audience, and nothing would make the audience happier than to turn SW America into more of their third world s**thole.

I will NEVER drink Absolut again!!

It is now a French owned company, bought from former Swedish owners earlier this year. Probably explains a lot.

Nothing like selling a company, and then trashing it before the take-over.

Kinda like the reposessed houses that people are destroying before turning them over to the bank.

As for me and my people? We won’t ever touch Absolut Vodka again! (Not that we ever did.)

Guest on Jerry Doyle tonight said...Mexicans teach such reminiscent “history” in their schools and it is part of the larger anti-American sentiment that a lot of the world has. The guest then said yet no one other than conservatives here in the US ever tries to combat it.

The lefties will be getting steeply discounted vodka just like they got steeply discounted french wine after the french abandoned George W. on Iraq. And they will buy it.

Real helpful, a**holes. I wish I could ban your slop, but I don't drink it in the first place.

"Mexicans will now just be drinking the vodka that Americans won’t drink". If you alienize vodka then only aliens will be drinking vodka.
