"The builders of the world's biggest particle collider are being sued in federal court over fears that the experiment might create globe-gobbling black holes or never-before-seen strains of matter that would destroy the planet."

” Ice-9” has been renamed. It’s now called “Spitzerite.”
Oh well, sh!t happens.
“A few dozen physicists bet everything all life on the planet! on their ability to calculate in advance the result of an experiment that had never been tried before.
Thats the money quote. How many people would be willing to put all life on the planet in the hands of a few dozen scientists?
“Enrico Fermi thought there was about a 10% chance the A bomb would ignite the nitrogen in the atmosphere....”
I believe such odds would be an unacceptable risk nowadays.
And, just prior to the Trinity test, he took wagers on his hunch from his fellow scientists. I find that sense of humor appealing in a scientist. :)
If it’s in the DC area, I’m all for it.
I don’t think it’s funny. I actually find it quite sad.
Well that’s depressing, I like to find humor in everything.
Note to self: Don’t bother to do any Christmas shopping in December, 2012.
I try my best, but I’m of the opinion that everyone needs some level of science education, of course, that would be far too much to ask. There are many studying the sciences and engineering that don’t even know these things.
Probably saw that low budget Skiffy Channel movie with Judd Nelson.
If it does ignite, everybody loses. If it doesn't, then only Fermi, assuming the other geniuses realize there's only one winning bet, loses.
OMG!! I just choked on my coffee from laughing so hard! Thanks!
Here’s a link to a short vid detailing the extraordinary security and safety precautions being taken at the super smasher!

I think I’m going to join the lawsuit since a guy down at the homeless shelter said a participle collator might increase rust on my truck.
But what does he know about rust?
While the Bible has much to attest to it’s predictive veracity, the west promotes some obscure Mayan prediction because it makes no real moral demands upon them, whereas it intuitively knows Jesus is a threat to their lifestyle: http://peacebyjesus.witnesstoday.org/RevealingStatistics.html
I remember reading that before we had ever set of an atomic bomb, some within the program were worried that there was a theoretical possibility it could set off our atmosphere and cook the whole planet.
I think it was mainly the janitors that believed this.
Oops. I see you beat me to it.
So Enrico wasn’t one of the janitors?
Next they’ll sue Churches after all there is a possibility that prayer could bring on Rapture
