FBI: Tattered parachute found in north Clark County may have been D.B. Cooper's (WA)
The Columbian ^ | March 25, 2008 | Tom Vogt

FBI agents in Seattle are examining a tattered parachute found recently in north Clark County, looking for evidence that it might have been used by legendary skyjacker D.B. Cooper.

The 'chute was found by children living near the center of the jump zone where the skyjacker bailed out of the 727 jetliner with $200,000 in cash in 1971, never to be heard from again.

Larry Carr, a special agent in the FBI's Seattle office, said the property owner was putting in a road on the site and his tractor blade uncovered some cloth. The children pulled out the canopy until the parachute's shroud lines appeared.

The owner of the property contacted the FBI, and Carr picked up the parachute earlier this month.

Now, after examining the parachute for about three weeks, the FBI could use more help, Carr said.

"We need to go back to the public. We need someone with knowledge of jumping equipment," Carr said by telephone from Seattle. Investigators hope to learn whether the parachute Cooper was given in 1971 matches the canopy in their possession.

People with information are asked to contact the FBI's Seattle office at fbise@leo.gov.

I wonder if this find is in proximity with the area where the marked bills were discovered years ago?

If he buried the chute, that means he made it to the ground alive.

Alive and relatively undamaged, if he took the trouble to bury the chute and not just shove it under a log somewhere.

If he invested it, it wouldn’t sound funny at all.

If he invested in WalMart, he'd be a member of the fortune 500.

Anyone think to look under the chute? Wonder if there are bones scattered about?

Yes they were found by a youngster digging in the sand along a river per my somewhat foggy memory.

Gotta' give them (FBI) credit for persistence.

Why? 'cause they looked at the 'chute for 3 weeks? Not like they found it themselves.

NO. It's because it has take them 37 years, just to get where they are now.

In the world today, the DB Cooper story would be compared to a thug robbing a convenience store.

DB is alive and well and living in a remote area of Manhatten. He’s also a lurker on FR. ;^)

Natural erosion could have buried the chute after all this time.

It sure as heck buries the erosion fence on construction sites in a matter of weeks!

There is the possiblity that someone in the area found a dead or dying DB and buried the chute when they ground him up in a woodchipper and took the money.

I just glanced at the Wikipedia article about B D Cooper. At one time John List was considered a suspect. He died Friday.

His story might be worth more to Hollywood and book-o-da-month club than what he stole, even if he invested wisely.

Where did he go?! Who is he?! Did he invest it or party?! Why didn’t he do it again?! Did he do it for a girl?! Did he run or parachute where he lived?! Etc.

Kids found some of them in a sand bar on the bank of a river (Columbia?) years ago. No other bills ever got back into circulation.

That led authorities to think that he didn't survive. Why go to all that trouble and then not spend any of the money?

I don’t know if they were marked. I believe some of the money was found along the banks of the Columbia River some years back around Vancouver.

But none of the $$ ever turned up in circulation.

They were watching for it.
