TIFTON — A Tifton agricultural researcher says he has found the solution to the world’s energy crisis through genetic modification and cloning of bacterial organisms that can convert bio-mass into hydrocarbons on a grand scale. The local researcher believes his groundbreaking discovery could result in the production of 500 to 1,000 barrels of hydrocarbon fuel per day from the initial production facility. The hydrocarbon fuel — commonly known as oil or fossil fuel when drilled — will require no modification to automobiles, oil pipelines or refineries as they exist today and could forever end the United States’ dependence on foreign oil, he said.
J.C. Bell, who brought the world powdered peanut butter, has spent the last four years, identifying the bacteria that produces hydrocarbon and then finding a way to genetically alter it so that it could produce hydrocarbon in greater volume.

Don’t think he’s a crackpot. This is at least the third university I have heard of trying to do the exact same thing, some with significant success. That means advancing this tech is becoming a good old fashioned capitalist race, with a HUMONGOUS prize going to the first to cross the finish line. As long as that happens before the govt can gum up the works, we should see viable energy from these techs in a few years at most.

Meanwhile the cost of oil sinks to $25/barrel and the commodity speculators move on to screw the people on some other commodity (like maybe LEAD or TIN).
Around $0.03 per gallon, but the carbon tax would be an additional $4.50.

My I’ve heard of several new energies on the horizon...
Landfills near me have been producing methane and generating electricity for several years.
I saw Dr Bussard's presentation about this, and it looked very impressive at face value, but as a non-physicist I could not tell how realistic it was. I was among several after the talk that were asking if we could invest a few thousand in it, but he didn't seem to want to raise funds that way.

I agree with the poster who said that ingenuity and the free market system can solve a lot of our problems; I hope this turns out to be something valuable.
In the main, right now, I think that the fact that we have no new refineries, we cannot drill offshore or in ANWR, and nuclear plants cannot be built in the current legal climate in the US is responsible for our dependence on the ME. And I am furious about that. I blame the greenies and Congress, along with the clueless Americans who elect these jerks.

You ever tried it? I have it on good authority that burned farts smell like burned farts. Not the same as the unburned variety but truly foul in their own way.
Don’t fret - there are at least two other new appraoches to the fusion problem that show as much (if not more) promise, and at least one of them is very well and privately funded.
