Daschle: First lady experience doesn’t count for Clinton

schle: First lady experience doesn’t count for Clinton By Aaron Blake Posted: 03/09/08 01:41 PM [ET] Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) on Sunday questioned Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s (N.Y.) pitching of herself as the most experienced candidate in the Democratic presidential race, suggesting her years as first lady do not add much to her foreign policy credentials.

Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Daschle, a supporter of Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), pointed out that Obama has served in elective office longer than Clinton and suggested her time as first lady does not have much relevance to the office she seeks.

“I worked with her; I know what a good first lady she was,” Daschle said. “But it would be hard for me to draw some degree of connection between being a first lady and having the experience to be the commander in chief.

“I don’t think anyone can look at her experience as first lady and say, for some reason, that qualifies her to run for president of the United States.”

Clinton supporter and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) said before Daschle’s comments that Obama is ready to be president but “not nearly as ready” as Clinton.

“I’ve been talking to Democratic candidates since 1980, and Hillary Clinton is the best-prepared candidate I’ve ever talked to – far better prepared than Bill Clinton was in 1992,” Rendell said.

Obama has served in elective office longer than Clinton

I don't agree with Daschle on much but that is simply a fact. She's the greenhorn in that race.

You mean the 1st Senate Leader to get voted out in 50 years?

That Tom Daschle?

Suggest he spend more time shopping for elevator shoes and less, on punditry.

That’s right, she served two terms as unelected co-president and her husband has already said he will fill that same role including sitting in on cabinet meetings.

There is a constitutional amendment prohibiting a third term. But then the Constitution is a piece of toilet paper to the DNC.

“I SUPPOSE YOU WOULD SAY THAT THE WOMEN THAT STAY AT HOME WHILE THEIR HUSBANDS ARE IN IRAQ 1,2 AND 3 OR MORE TIMES DONT SERVE THEIR COUNTRY EITHER? !!!!!!

Be very careful about how you answer this one.....”

They very definitely serve their country, but their experience does not necessarily make them ready for combat in Iraq.

A wife who holds down the home front for three full tours for a husband who is a captain of armored cavalry has undoubtedly served her country valiantly.

But could she victoriously lead tanks into battle just like her husband?

No.

Neither one is qualified to be the assistant dog catcher in Huxley, Iowa.

Isn't that going a bit far? Huxley has, what, about 2,000 people? How hard can it be to be dog catcher there, let alone assistant dog catcher? I think either Hillary or Barack would be able to handle the responsibilities just fine...and it might keep them out of mischief.

I don't know that there is any "careful" here. I'd simply acknowledge their loyalty and support are as important as food, water and air for any soldier. That being said, I'm not ready send any of these wonderful women to the front line any time soon.

: )

The spouses of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines technically do not "serve" their country... but they sure as Hell do sacrifice for it. That's far more than either Hillary or Obama have ever done.

How hard must it have been for Daschle to keep a straight face while Bubba was in office.

Wow...

I never realized how much contempt Democrats secretly held for the Clintons until this race. DU is really fun these days too. There is a lot of deep seated anger and distrust of Hillary ... and of the Clintons in general. Many of them claim they never liked her.

Of course, their contempt wasn’t enough for them to convict Bill in the impeachment hearings, where all the Democrats voted for Bill.

Big difference, Bill. In the former, he was in the office and they would have lost power. Now, they are counting on being able to defeat her before she is in office. If that happens, it will increase their power.

This argument can get old. Of course we would use some high ranking officer, or portrait the soldier who holds down the front line with a rifle to compare to a wife who
may I say could “lead tanks into battle” if she had too.

There are many who serve and are at a desk, write the stories,or type the orders...they serve whether they are fired on or not. To the degree you want to rank them matters not. You have no clue what battles are fought on the home front...and I would boldly say even a “ captain of amored cavalry” would probably not be able to handle.

As for Hillary Clinton...You may not like her, but do not presume to know what went on without you behind close doors. I think it is a light argument...to say she doesnt have what it takes to lead this country... She has been threw more than a lot....As for character...now their you may have an argument. I am a McCain supporter...If you were to say Cindy McCain doesnt have what it takes...I am sure even John would beg to differ.

Mrs. Clinton pulled the strings behind the cover ups for bills aggressive behavior towards females.
She also screwed up the health care take over and not much else other than acting like a supporting first wife.
She acted like a mafia hit man.

Ok...you just described about half of our Congressmen and a few Presidents...

Would you like to go down the list of “Mafia” type behaviors we have seen in the Senate?

Again character does matter.. but to say she cannot be a President is untrue...She may not be your pick, but I think you get my point.
