NEW YORK - WNBC.com has learned that NYPD and FBI officials are now revisiting an incident that occurred along the Canadian border last month because they are concerned there might be a connection to the Times Square explosion. Four men trying to cross the border tried to flee the checkpoint when Canadian officials tried to question them, investigators said. Two of the men got away, officials said.
The men left behind a backpack with photos of various New York City locations including Times Square, according to sources speaking on condition of anonymity. One of the photos included the military recruitment center, officials said. As a precaution, NYPD outreach officers last month went to various New York City businesses, including the Times Square recruitment center, to investigate if there had been any recent threats. No threat information was known at the time.

“Right now, my moneys on white suburban punk anarchists.”
Very likely true.
But, just as likely is that the supplies ,funding, motivation, and encouragement is coming from terrorists who flee just prior to the planned attack.
Hence, the link between the two stories.
I agree. We know that AQ has been interested for some time in developing white operatives in the west. Had this been a true jihadi, he’d probably have blown himself up at midday on Wall street, taking with him as many infidels as possible.
If the guy is a white guy who had been co-opted by AQ, he’d be way to valuable to risk on a simple pipe bomb planting mission. That’s the guy that AQ instructs to get a job working security at the airport or a construction job where he’s got access to demolition explosives or perhaps even as a volunteer to a United States Presidential candidate.
The target seems wrong to me for ME terrorists. It appears more like someone’s been watching the Berkeley recruiting saga, saw that Berkeley got lots of bad press in the media and decided to show some unsolicited solidarity.
Perhaps as a distraction but you are probably right. Usually any violent, dramatic and evil act always has its own imitators. We have stopped the AQ imitators, but the counter-recruitment efforts are so below the radar that we cannot stop the imitators especially if they are nuisances.
I also agree that AQ loves collateral damage, but the maps, the locations everything makes me think of a terrorist group(like AQ) casing a place to do whatever evil they can think of inside or outside of that area. Now there are also other groups who love that stuff but are very different from AQ(like the Weather Underground who made it a point that they would only use their bombings as political statements and not as murders). What we are basically looking for is a lower-profile insignificant version of Mark David Chapman, who used a tabloid cover to find and kill John Lennon.
I also agree that AQ is smarter than just some guy on a bike breaking a few windows. The volunteer to a Presidential campaign is indeed an interesting suggestion, could there be a lot more with the conversations that the Weather Underground leaders had with Obama than we think? Perhaps that is why Obama seems so new, messianic, and has a checkered past that he isn’t too prone to rhapsodize about.
I am not a conspiracy nut, nor do I think that anything is “going on”. Afterall using that kind of logic, maybe Huma has something up her sleeve.
Yeah, the ‘peace’ people...
FortMcmurray Alberta!...send the squads.
Please
I agree that this is more likely a domestic liberal than an Al Qaeda operative.
However, two things to consider:
1) Even with border control, government stinks at controlling the border.
2) Don’t discount the possibility that this is a VietNam draft dodger coming home for one last “hurrah”.
I think it’s white suburban anarchist punks, too; these were probably the guys they caught at the border. I imagine they released the two they grabbed, but the others appear to have scampered off into the woods.
I doubt that they were AQ. If AQ has gotten so weak all it can do now is throw a cherry bomb at a recruiting station, I’d say we’ve won! But unfortunately, I don’t think that’s the case.
BTW, wasn’t Canada giving “sanctuary” to a couple of American soldiers who had gone AWOL? I think the incident happened a couple of years ago. But in any case, Canada is high on the list of places for US military-haters to hang out.
Canadian officials question people trying to get in to Canada.
Maybe because the article says “anarchist-types.”.
;-)
They must have been trying to enter Canada. I have never known a “checkpoint”, manned by Canada customs, to exist when one is leaving Canada for the US.
Given that they were stopped by Canadian border guards, they were probably on the US side trying to enter Canada.
Nope, their deportation is working its way through the courts but they've lost every hearing.
Stop selling us oil, gas and electricity?
Maybe pull Canadian troops out of Kandahar and present the US with the need to find another battle group on short notice to replace the Canadian one. Good luck on getting NAYO to kick in troops to that hot theatre,
Note that the Canada bashers did not seem to recognize in this article the fact that the US only knows about these people because of the close co-operation between the two countries' enforcement and intel agencies.
Yet The suggested response by at least one Freeper on this thread is to reward this co-operation by bombing Canada.
That’s good to know!
Not only was he losing at the tribunal level and on appeal but he saw that no US deserter was getting any sympathy from the Crown or any of the tribunals and courts involved.
My guess the day after was
90% Leftwing anti-war types
9% Islamic terrorists
1% someone trying to keep the terror issue in the forefront
now it’s 51% category A and 49% category B
Welcome it! At least I would. By all means, I would LOVE this to happen.
