LOS ANGELES The Oscars were a ratings dud. More so than usual, even.
Preliminary ratings for the 80th annual Academy Awards telecast were 14 percent lower than the least-watched ceremony ever, according to Nielsen Media Research.
Nielsen said Monday that overnight ratings were also 21 percent lower than last year, when "The Departed" was named best picture.
The least-watched Oscars ceremony ever was in 2003, when there were 33 million viewers.

Nielsen has no estimate yet on how many people watched Sunday night, but based on ratings from the nation's biggest markets, the Oscars will be hard-pressed to avoid an ignominious record.

That is exactly what I did. As someone else has said,"I ain't buyin' what the're sellin'."
You may have it. I stole mine from a bumper sticker from the 1980s.
I was thinking that watching the ground crew roll out the tarp during a rain delay of a pre-season baseball game is more interesting to me. The last time I watched one of those Hollywood circle jerks was when Bob Hope was MC.

The Oscars at one time was somewhat unique ... today there are award shows on TV practically every other week. The entertainment industry is the most self congratulatory business in America ... in fact award shows have turned into their own business.
I loved “Enchanted” and thought the music was very good, too. I took my 5yr old daughter, but enjoyed it just as much as she did.
It was a movie that made you feel good at the end - I love happy endings!!
Hollyweird does NOT like movies that make you feel good, feel proud, or feel like a true American.
I liked “Meet the Robinsons”, too - I’m very surprised that I have not heard much about it.
You’re right! “Meet the Robinsons” is amazing. The animation is unbelievable. The bubbles are my favorite. I wish I would have seen it in 3D. I think that the reason why it is not spoken of much is because it is a Boy/Man centered movie. No woman comes in and saves the day.
Which is one of the reasons that I’m very surprised “Enchanted” was ignored, for the most part. Strong female character saves the day in the end. I guess James Marsden (who doesn’t fit the Hollywood mold) cancelled out Susan Sarandon in the lib mind!!!
There is NOTHING damn creepier than John Travolta in that sanitised version of the original movie. This ain't Uncle Miltie...this is a wink and a nod to "Kids, if you enjoyed this film, check out the original with the mom played by a REAL transvstite who in other John Waters films ate dog poop."
I swear to God, I am going to take that mind-numbing musical DVD from my kids, pop it into my video editor and remove every trace of that no-talent, effeminant, wheezy, middle-aged bonehead Scientologist and scatter his electrons to the winds.
I like rats , think they make great pets, and I even think they're cute-and even I got the heebie jeebies from some of the scenes of rats running around the kitchen. Even though the animators carefully showed them washing their 'hands".
The dead fathers concept was everyone can cook but the human hero STILL could not cook at the end of the story.
Gack. I watched this at the theater and I rented it from netflix, so Ive seen it twice-I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't notice that.
That is how I feel about it. To be honest, I really love programs such as Lost, 24, Shield, Dead Like Me for escapism. Although there are subtle political messages, the entire movie isn’t a political push it down your throat.
Rome was awesome and I know there are some others
I can barely make it thru a movie without turning it off in disgust.

LOLOLOL!!!
EVERY and I mean EVERY person I know who actually enjoyed Hairspray didn’t make it through five minutes of the original film. I saw it in the eighties and tried to watch it again. Poo.
I’m sorry but I have to give credit for someone in Hollywood taking a basic dark movie and turning it into a movie so filled with joy, so full of the message that “you are not how you look” and so happy that it was wonderful.
I’m glad your kids enjoyed it. You can tell them that after lent, they are more than welcome to come to my house and watch it on our 50” Plasma with the Surround Sound. We can all sigh at James Marsden and Zac Efron.
Yes, in my house we are the “Nicest Kids in Town”.
the new hollyweird meme is where the rugged individual white male is proven a buffoon and the day is saved the the feminist stereotypel and her la times certified magic black person. (and the USA sucks and it is all GWBush’s fault)
Stopped watching years ago around 1999 and glad to see others have also decided the annual celebration of hype over craft is a waste of time...
being familiar with the real article, ll the male rats are drawn like females. (after all children are watching)
The whole movie was “alas it might have been.”
The movie writers were clueless when the little old lady could not shoot a rat with a twelve gauge. From there it is all downhill.
Did you ever see “Barnyard” where all the “boy cows” had udders?
That one was really bad.
must have been a san franceeeesco farm.
Michael Moore’s FATHER was a Military Interrogator??? Where...WHEN?? Was he as VILE and EVIL as his son?
Hollyweird will blame it on a right wing conspiracy. Oliver Stoned to direct mockumentary about it.
George Cloony to play heroic president of oscar commitee.
Donald Sutherland to play Karl Rove.
Ben Affleck to play TV network producer.
Matt Damon to play head of oscars security.
Julia Roberts to play actress who tries to hold back tears as she is giving acceptance speech after being informed nobody is watching.
LOLOLOL!
I think you may be right!
