WASHINGTON California, which once lured Americans from near and far, is now driving out millions of the most productive residents including high percentages of the most affluent.
"When California faced a Mount Everest-sized $14 billion deficit in 2003, one of the major causes for the red ink was the stampede of millionaire households from the state," says a report called "Rich States, Poor States" by economists Arthur Laffer and Stephen Moore. "Out of the 25,000 or so seven-figure-income families, more than 5,000 left in the early 2000s, and the loss of their tax payments accounted for about half the budget hole."
And it's not just the rich leaving.
Based on data from moving companies, California had the second-highest domestic population out-flow of any state in 2005, according to the report, "despite the beautiful weather, beaches, and mountains."
The bad news for California is that it faces $14 billion deficit this year, despite boasting one of the highest tax burdens in the nation.
The report, published by the American Legislative Exchange Council shows jobs are not just leaving the country they are moving from state to state, with the population following.
"States are in direct competition with each other for human capital and business investment. State governments that think they can attract jobs and people, and grow their economies, by taxing their citizens at a higher rate than their neighbors are sadly mistaken," said Democratic Arkansas state Sen. Steve Faris, ALEC's 2008 national chairman. "Legislators should take a close look at where their state ranks in this book and use it as a tool to help them improve."

I wish I was back there.

Oh, I've met so many Californians here who can't take the weather and the roads and they move back to California. I mean, once you've lived in California, even if you move out for a while, most everyone ends up going back. You can't beat the weather there. After just a few winters here with all the snow and cold weather, and then the good ol' boy politics and all the racism that exists in "flyover country," it's just impossible for anyone to want to stay in Indiana. Better to not even bother coming here.
ah got it
I thought you were saying you stay democrat because you pay 5$ to get a barbecue
as for republican being a jerk well I think martinez and crist(sp) are well I wouldn’t say jerks but I think are way too liberal, still it;s better than a dem in my eyes and even Mccain I have a real lot of difference I suppose I will still vote for hiim because of I couldn’t not even bear to think of Obama of being the president and no way do I want clinton back in that house.
Obama for me would destroy this country from within and I truely believe he has many agendas he has not told people.
as for MC Cain change his miond about his amnesty, I came here from England the legal way I spent years paying my fees , working hard ,paying taxes, got in line, did my interviews etc etc, in the end It was worth it and would hate to see poeple get ahead after breaking the law .
nice part of the state you are in, I am in st augustine and thethose lected have seen sense and are putting a hold on big planners knocking down trees in our county of st johns, shame they never did it years ago to stop these gated communities which sell houses for millions and I mean 5 or 6 million.
The people moved in here an dthought that the county should build them a school because they never wanted their kids to go to school with the likes of us ordinary folk.
they too got told to do one thankfully
Go out there on a Summer morning and pull in pumpkin seeds by the gazillions, set the umbrella on the boat just so, and drift off.
There are these little strings of small lakes, one set maybe 25 feet higher than the next, going up the hillsides ~ YOU DO NOT WANT THOSE CALIFORNIANS to know about any of that.
Keep their minds on the ice and snow, the tornadoes, thunderstorms, threat of reglaciation, inland earthquakes!
My Greatgrandfather had a place he called "The Ten Acres" ~ out in the country ~ a place away from the homes in town. And they'd go out there every Summer and make use of the hot spring and the cold spring ~ live under the trees, grow fresh veggies, and simply enjoy.
There are thousands of caves too. Why a Californian might fall in one and just disappear.
And just to be clear for some that may have felt they reside in or near much worse crime areas. There is too much crime everywhere, and I think I have made that case crystal clear.
Lady in front of us was talking about being from "somewhere California". So, we asked her, "where from in California and why are you here". She answered "Los Angeles and I'm here so my kids can grow up and not get shot".
Prett good answer. Several others around us murmured that they, too, had come there from California because, as it turned out, they wanted their kids to grow up.
Cold as heck too.
I met to say, I was just being clear to some here that might have felt they resided in much safer areas in regards to crime.
Hmmm..Note the murder and assaults...And just about every category.
Now I know that aint Seymour, but....
Chicago Illinois and Los Angeles, Ca Comparative Crime Ratios per 100,000 People
I was carjacked in my driveway and burglarized twice in California. We lived in Riverside, in a middle class neighborhood. It was just bordered by crap. We fled for our lives when we moved six years ago. People on here gave us crap, saying that we were traitors to California and that we should stay and fight the onslaught. I think the war was lost over 30 years ago. It's just that no one knew it yet.
But, maybe I should move back and risk it, because those caves around here are scary! It's the karst geology. I've heard of people walking along and the ground just swallowing them up. The lakes might look nice, too, until you're near them and you get eaten alive by all the bugs.
At one time Seymour had two Wal-Marts ~ finally they combined operations into a Super-Wal-Mart.
You could find 5 (count'em five) different models of artificial deer to put out in your lawn or your blind.
Ammo is sold by the pallet load, and they have one of the world's finest collections of shotguns in that store. Down the road are half a dozen other "hunting gear" stores that would make the NRA museum on the ground floor of their headquarters look empty!
I don't think Seymour's murder rate is anywhere near Chicago's or Los Angeles'.
Think of ‘em as FREE BAIT.
Kind of what Yankees do in places like Florida?
But one nice thing about people from New Jersey is that when we move to a new state, we do not feel compelled to re-create the pathologies of New Jersey everywhere we go.
News to me. When I lived in Pa., all the transplants from NY and NJ tried to bring their culture with them. Go to the Poconos some day.
LOL. You have to be kidding. There are bumper stickers in the South that were created because of people from NY and NJ (and Mass etc.). They say, “We don’t care how you do it up North!”
No one said it was small, just one issue among many. The thing about living in Virginia is that if I am assaulted I would be more likely to be able to defend my self than in my native state of California. If I thought I was as free there as I am here and I could afford the $980K it would take to buy the house (in Orange County) we paid $24K for back when I started High School in 1971, I’d move back. I love Orange County. But crime is a problem everywhere. Essential freedoms are important too.
Where are those stats from please?
I’d like to know how the source, defines “Los Angeles”.
Depending on how it’s defined, it’s either a tiny segment middle of the actual city stretching out toward Beverly Hills and Wilshire Blvd.
Or it’s the whole clogged, gang-banging mess. Including South LA (otherwise known as South Central), East LA (can you say “MS-13”?), and Hollywood/Valley.
All three of those are high-crime, high-gang areas.
LA proper, really isn’t so much. It’s mostly now high-rises and businesses by day, hotels by night.
Just curious. Thanks. :)
You are only half right!
Conservatives like me, BABY Boomer, are taking our retirement out of this state as fast as we can!
Great weather my A$$
This whole state is full of crap!
