WASHINGTON -- Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee says it is "unfounded" for anyone to say he has alienated the Mormon community or that he used rival Mitt Romney's LDS faith as a wedge issue.
...
Huckabee said he would have concern if anyone said he had estranged the Mormon community.
...
"Anyone who says that I have this anti-Mormon prejudice is absolutely off the mark," Huckabee said. "And it has no basis whatsoever."
Some Mormon Republicans, though, say Huckabee ran a campaign playing off the concern some Protestant evangelicals have for Mormons, viewed as heretical by some groups. Some evangelicals do not consider Mormons to be Christians.
Huckabee ran television spots in Iowa calling himself a "Christian leader," and refused to say whether he thought the LDS Church was a cult, referring that question instead to Romney.
Kirk Jowers, director of the University of Utah's Hinckley Institute for Politics and a Romney friend and supporter, said he wonders if Huckabee's response this week was "revisionist history."
But "I'm very happy to hear him say that," Jowers said. "And I suppose the best thing to do is accept him at his word. However, his approach to Romney's religion seemed very different in the days leading up to Iowa."
...
Huckabee said he personally apologized to Romney for "any pain that would have caused."

I'm not sure I'm ready to be scolded by Huckabee for believing he played into the anti-Mormon sentiment that is prevalent in the Southern Baptist church.
The article notes that some Mormons have said they wouldn't vote for Huckabee because of his anti-Mormon approach to the election. So whether Huckabee meant to do so or not, it's clear he said things that made them think he opposed them. Since the conservative Mormons are among our best allies in the social conservative movement, it's hardly smart to be antagonizing them over religious matters in the political realm.
The Huckster and his minions are religious bigots.
How can the truth be an attack?
He did it all right, now he’s gonna have to live with the consequences of his bigotry.
Put all the intolerant ones in wooden stocks and place them in the middle of town square.
Bingo!
The sooner Rev. Huckabee is off the stage, the better for our nation and our party. (IMHO, of course)
He can’t bail the water out fast enough to keep is row boat a float. And it is not Holy Water!
Jesus and Satan.. and all of us are children of Heavenly Father. Jesus was the first born in the spirit as well as the only born to God the Father in the Flesh.
Satan joined with 1/3 of the hosts of heaven(children of our Heavenly rather.. brothers and sisters of both Jesus and Satan) and rebelled and was cast down to earth. It’s basic doctrine. However, the main-stream christian doctrine(depending on which of the 20,000 beliefs out there) is not sure who Satan or Christ really are relative to God the Father. That’s why Huckabee maybe is not clear on this issue himself.

I will give him this - he is an extremely good liar, particularly when lying about his past. It must be a prerequisite to be a Governor of Arkansas.
The mormons learned their last lesson about mixing religion and politics (overtly, as in the case of the Huckster) back in June of 1844.
In America, folks take their personal religion/beliefs or lack thereof, very seriously. One only need to look at the contentious issue of abortion on demand as just one small example. So, be careful of "the truth".
Huckabee is either a bigot, or he’s clueless.
Absolutely. The Mormon Church has yet to deny that they believe Jesus and Satan are brothers. They cannot deny it because it is doctrine.
Unfortunately, Huckabee probably was doing a little “nod, nod, wink, wink” thing when he brought it up knowing that it would draw a contrast between his Christianity and Mormonism. He knew what he is doing.
The sad result was that Romney made his “Mormon speech”, modeled after JFK’s famous “Catholic speech” thereby making further discussion of Mormonism off-limits and very politically incorrect.
Yet at the same time, attacks on evangelical Christianity remain perfectly acceptable.
Same with Mitt.
Oh please.
Because the statement "they believe Jesus and Satan were brothers" invokes the thought of Earthly brotherhood (without knowing the real teachings) and that it is a central key tenant of our belief (it rarely taught and emphasized). The real belief is that everyone are brothers and sisters (taught much more frequently). The statement is used to invoke shock at the differences in religions.
Imagine if someone said "don't Catholics believe in the cannibalizing of Christ". While not accurate it is "true" (notice the quotes) and used to invoke shock. And yes I've heard people say the cannibalize thing before against Catholics.
This is no more an attack on the Mormon faith than it is to bring up that Jehovah's Witnesses have been predicting the eniment end of the world since 1875 or that the Muslim faith teaches that Muhammad took a wife who was nine years old. All of these teachings can be found in those religions, regardless of how you intrepret it (you could say literally, symbolically, figuratively, etc.), it is part of their doctrine.
Every religion has some weird quarky views. Mitt Romney could just have easily asked where Huckabee's Southern Baptist faith teaches that woman must submit graciously to their husbands, and Romney would simply be telling the truth as well.
Huckabee made it clear that he opposes the idea of voting against anyone because of his or her faith and he was perfectly comfortable with having a Mormon run this nation. His quarrel with Romney was over the issues, the fact Huckabee thought several of the Mormon church's doctrines were weird and outside mainstream Christian beliefs did not affect Romney's qualifications to be President, and certainly wasn't "anti-Mormon bigotry" anymone than the vast majority of Americans who also agree that Mormonism is far removed from mainstream Christian doctrine. Joe Lieberman is a Jew, but if you said he does not accept Jesus as his savior, it's not an attack unless you said "only people who accept Jesus as their savior should hold office" (which is something Katherine Harris foolishly said during her Senate race, was harshly rebuked by me)
Welll it is really hard to ‘discern’ how much the doctrine of Mormon faith bugggged Huckabee or the fact that Romney seems to have been blessed with a ‘wealth’ that continues to escape Huckabee.
