ABC News' George Stephanopoulos and John Berman Report: Former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., today endorsed his former Republican rival Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. The endorsement took place this afternoon at Romney for President headquarters in Boston.
Romney asked his delegates to throw their support to McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
"Even when the contest was close and our disagreements were debated, the caliber of the man was apparent," Romney said, standing with McCain for the announcement at his now-defunct campaign's headquarters in Boston. "As a party, we come together."
Accepting Romney's endorsement, McCain said despite a "hard campaign" now "we move forward together for the good of our party and the nation."
Once bitter rivals locked in an acrimonious Republican nomination fight, Romney abandoned his 2008 bid following a poor showing in the Super Tuesday contests this month. Romney had won the support of many in the conservative wing of the party, but failed to overtake McCain in either delegates or the number of state wins.
The former governor made his decision to endorse today in the interest of helping McCain gain the 1,191 delegates he needs to secure the party nomination and unite the party for the general election against the Democrats in November.
Romney campaign manager Beth Myers notified McCain campaign manager Rick Davis in a telephone call today of Romney's decision, and they immediately made arrangements for an announcement in Boston this afternoon since McCain was campaigning in Rhode Island today.
After McCain's townhall meeting near Providence this afternoon, the campaign is flying to Boston for the endorsement.
Romney and McCain will meet today before they both announce the formal endorsement at a press conference.
He already did that.
Yeah, read the link that I posted...it was posted by the AP, but nobody’s posted a full statement and nobody has confirmed this at all. Everyone who wrote about it took it from the AP article that only had the one quote in it.
In MittWorld, that would mean that Mitt could move mountains using only his staunch conservatism. In the real world, we should at least question it a LITTLE bit before we go saying that it actually happened.
I’d love to see the actual statement, for instance. I guess I’m just a stickler like that...
When?
You are bad — (but funny)
Oh me, oh my, what will everyone say now?
I think Hunter already endorsed Huckabee. But when Huck drops out, he will endorse McCain. And Hunter will probably follow.
IMO the only GOP contender that will not endorse McCain is Ron Paul (who may not even survive his own re-election to Congress.)
I'll add to that, Ford had an ACU rating of 64% over his last three years in the House.
You're right. I just did a search for it.
“Notice that I never said anything about Obama”
What you just said is the equivelant of hopping in a car with your buddies and the driver says “Where do you want to eat?” One person says “Olive Garden” another says “Just not McDonald’s!”
And you pipe in with “No one was talking about McDonald’s!”
The point of the this thread is the discussion of an upcoming election, the chief member to beat of the opposing school of thought is *Obama*.
Or do politics happen in a bubble?
Your scenario would put Nancy Pelosi ( currently) in the Presidency, since both McCain and Cheney are bad risks for health/age as Presidents/
I for one have noted Romney’s rightward motion and will be far more inclined to support him next election if he stays firm to his newer convictions. I also think he did the right thing withdrawing AND endorsing McCain.
The polls do not reflect your predictions of a slaughter-like Obama victory.
When will Spanish be mandatory?
I'll match your $20 and say Hunter endorses Huckabee.
FReep mail me and I'll give you my address to send the $$$.
It's time to hope for the best and prepare for the worst no matter who wins.
I think this goes a long way with me voting for McCain, because I respect Romney a lot and the way I figure it, I see Romney coming back as a candidate in the future. It sure would be nice if McCain asked Romney to be his running mate, I think that would seal the deal. But, the chances for that might be less than my hopes.
I hope McCain makes it very clear to conservatives that he is not going to betray us on the illegal alien debate. That would sink any chances he has in the General. I can disagree with McCain on several other issues, but this issue is the deal maker or deal breaker. He’s got to get on board with Hannity on this one.
Gee, Mitt’s a flip flopper of the highest order. He proved it today.
Ya think McCain looks that bad enough to keel over? I’m not a medical person but he doesn’t look healthy enough to tackle the hardest job in the world.
