Why many conservatives can't vote for McCain
The Everett Herald ^ | February 10, 2008 | Mona Charen

I posted a squib on the National Review Web site about a robo call I received from John McCain. (Virginia's primary is Tuesday.) The call stressed that he would, if elected, be a down-the-line limited government conservative who would never raise taxes, would defend life, would enforce immigration laws and would win the war on terror. The candidate is trying, I said, to meet conservatives "more than halfway." The response of readers was, shall we say, emphatic.

One lady wrote that she would never vote for him as "He is the most disloyal, ill-tempered man and he brings out the worse in all of us. ..." Several readers made the point that after decades of suffering abuse at McCain's hands, conservatives are not going to fall into line for him now, no matter what blandishments he offers.

I know how they feel. The problem with McCain is not just that he strays. George Bush has strayed from conservatism, too. So has Fred Thompson. Certainly Mitt Romney has as well. But Sen. McCain has a knack for saying things in just the tones and accents that liberals prefer. In 2000, he condemned the late Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson as "agents of intolerance." In 2004, when Sen. John Kerry was getting his comeuppance from the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, vets who had known him during the war and couldn't remain silent as the Democratic nominee distorted his war record, McCain weighed in by calling the Swift Boaters "dishonorable and dishonest." When the Bush Administration was being vilified as a nest of Torquemadas for using waterboarding on three occasions, McCain came forward to condemn waterboarding as torture.

Has anyone even considered a prayer chain asking God to raise up a conservative candidate for this election cycle.

The fat lady hasn't tuned up yet, so it's not too late. I believe that He really cares.

The results from yesterday show a clear message that McCain is not wanted or desired by the grassroots for the Republican Party.

Huckabee’s involvement with McCain is pretty certain in my mind, so his current candidacy is suspect at best.

The vote for Huck yesterday shows that my “Anyone But McCain” position has massive grassroots support.

The filing deadline for the Pennsylvania beauty contest primary (April 22nd) is Tuesday. The bosses have all delegate canddidates run as “uncommitted”, then run insider elected officials so they can control the delegation (this year for McCain).

OK, honest question here? Who is further to the left, McCain or Hillary?

If I recall correctly, McCain has something like a 75% (middle of the road for Congress) rating with a major conservative watchdog. However, that’s a “per vote” rating, not an issue based one. On the issues (gun control, GW’s barely adequate tax cuts, immigration, ad nauseum), he’s stabbed us conservatives in the back so many times that it’s hard to count. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice (or three or four or more realistically 10), shame on me.

What a dang mess...

I am so pleased McAmnesty is should we say GETTING HIS PAYBACK ! They always say “Pay Backs Are A Bit*h”. McCaain is a fool if he thinks he can hurt the Conservatives for decades then just beg for Conservatives to support us and His Hurtful Voting Pattern in the Senate all all forgiven.

The gull this loser has. To hell with McCain ! I will take immense pleasure watching him get shafted, and will be smiling as McCain is DENIED THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT !

Sweet revenge has at last arrived.

He does care and I am praying that God’s will be done.
In Jesus’ Holy name.
Amen.

NO SALE!

The best description of conservatives I’ve heard is a comparison to battered housewives who just aren’t going back to that man...

The sooner the GOP figures out that the base will vote for anyone but McCain the better.

Sure doesn’t look goo that McCain loses all these primaries and caucuses in red states, like what happened yesterday.

Tony Snow was so great at CPAC yesterday I really think he should run for president. I wonder if he can be drafted. Or maybe he can be persuaded to run in 2012.

Devoid of any ideas, without a true course and holding a "spinning" moral compass, the g.o.p. has only one strategy....

..Out Hillary, Hillary with the moderates and use Hillary to scare the hell out real conservatives.

McCain lies. He has betrayed us too many times.

How can we trust him?

This is going to be painful allowing the Democrat BUT WE MUST STAND STRONG.

If we cave due to Democrat Fear, The Liberals who have hijacked the Old G.O.P. will continue to select Candidate to Run for President on the Republican ticket WHO ARE MODERATE TO LIBERAL.

We Conservative MUST SAY NO Sometimes it is better to LOSE in ORDER TO WIN.

Yes we will lose this 2008 election most likely to the Democrat, BUT NEXT TIME THE REPUBLICANS will figure it out. If The G.O.P. continues to Nominate Liberals WE WILL STAY HOME IN PROTEST.

If they lose enough maybe they will give us WHAT WE WANT A CONSERVATE !

So sometimes its worth losing in the shortrun TO WIN IN THE LONG RUN !

Why many conservatives can't vote for McCain

Because -- unlike moderates and liberals -- we genuinely possess standards. And principles.

Agreed. Nobody likes losing. The question we have to ask ourselves is, do we lose more by voting for a liberal than we would by not supporting him and letting a more liberal candidate win?

I think the answer to that is Yes.

Besides, it’s McCain. He’s shown too many times that he says one thing than does another.

Has anyone begun a website for all of us Conservative Republicans who have no intention of voting for McCain if he is nominated? I think we should all cast our ballot for our candidate: “NOT McCain”
The way he has stuck his finger in the eye of Conservative Republicans for lo these many years is totally undeserving of our support. I for one am sick of compromising, so we can ‘have a chance next time.’
Listen, I liked George Bush. I think he’s a good guy. But I was royally pissed when he came out with his bull about “compassionate conservatism.’ As opposed to what? No one is more compasisonate toward his or her fellow man or woman than conservatives are. Geoge played into this myth to win favor with the liberals (”see I am not one of those extreme right-wingers). Well I am sick of this grovelling to the liberals. let’s get some spine and hold true to our principles. If we don’t have attractive conservative candidates, then we need to get to work and start grooming them. Until then, we will only be further way from our goal by fielding compromise candidates. The Liberal Democrats must be laughing their heads off at the Right for being such gullible fools. Politics is the art of wielding power. I am sick of hearing about ‘reaching out across the aisle; bi-partisanship.’ The reason why I am a Republican is because of the party’s conservative platform. Why, if I am principled, would I want to engage in bi-partisanship?

Like an old Bob Dole, old McLame will lose big.
I will write in Ronald Reagan,
McLame and the G.O.P. leadership has been telling conservatives to go to hell for quite some time and using them like the Dems use blacks.
Maybe the party leadership thinks the only way to win is by smoozing with the middle and left. Well that’s fine and maybe they can win without the right but i don’t think so.

McCain will not carry twelve states.

The GOP will be reeling the day after the election. Time to entirely remake the party.

This is our time in the Wilderness. Churchill had his, we will now have ours. Our job will be to find our Churchill.
