This for all of you "die-hard Reagan Republicans" out there ... you know, the ones who are acting like you're not going to support John McCain in this year's election .. and who may even sit this one out. By now you should have heard about McCain's speech yesterday before CPAC. Here are just some of the things McCain said he would do:
** Continue to carry the fight to the Islamic radicals and goons wherever we can get to them.
88 Close the borders .. tight .. before any consideration is given as to what to do with the illegals who are already here.
** Not sign a bill with earmarks in it. ANY earmarks in it.
** Reduce the size of government.
** Not allow the expansion of entitlement programs
** Make the Bush tax cuts permanent
** Cut corporate tax rates.
** End AMT
** Develop free market solutions for health care, and respect for the right of free individuals to make choices for themselves.

I don't know, but that sounds like a fairly good conservative platform for me. Sure, there are things that I, as a Libertarian, would change.
For instance, not only would I block the expansion of entitlement programs, I would start a rollback.
Making the Bush tax cuts permanent would not be enough .. there's the FairTax.
And then there's my idea for a 10th Amendment Commission .. and I would like to see the systematic elimination of all government schools, beginning with transferring power to local governments and mandating voucher and school choice programs as a prerequisite for any school to get any federal government money at all.
But .. McCain is the guy. He's going to be the nominee unless something really bizarre happens. If you don't support his candidacy .. if you sit out the election .. just how much influence do you think you are going to have during his presidency? That is ...if your actions don't put Hideous Hillary in office.
IF I actually believed McCain would do these things, I would be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. But I don’t trust him to do them. We have his past record of over a decade versus a speech he made yesterday.
So, who will play the maverick against McCain?
What Republican will run to the media to agree with the Dems? And slam McCain everyday during his campaign, and if elected, continue to harass his every decision in the press?
Whomever steps up will be my hero.
I'm sorry...and you think Juan "Reach Across the Aisle to Democrats, but Screw You Conservatives" McCain is going to appoint any justices that don't get the liberal seal of approval?? Got news for you.
Maybe if McCain would ask Rummy to be his VEEP I would think McCain is changing his ways. Rummy knows economy and Rummy is a person of class, and Rummy is a ‘war’ hero as well....
"Whatever you want to hear from me I will say to get elected."
"Believe what I say today, not what I have done for 20 years."
"Don't confuse yourself with misleading facts."
"Practice holding your nose and you will be ready to vote in November."
.
.
But how does that make Hillary or Obama the better choice?
What a great election. heads we lose, tails we lose.
“Trust, but verify.” - Ronald Reagan.
NO he does not need conservatives to win. He has all the MODERATES....
I think he will get alot of the Dem vote.
Good to see you, too!!
McCains response to the Swiftboat Vets relating their direct memories about Kerry in Vietnam is telling. He trashed them immediately. Either he knew they were probably right and lied, or he didnt know anything and reacted against them by reflex. The media jumped on his words to defend Kerry of course.
I think McCain reacted reflexively because of his PTSD and a vexing fear that the same sort of revelations could come out about him.
He could have just kept his mouth shut. Or he could have read the book (Unfit...) and researched it himself to give an educated response. But the resonance that he too was Unfit for Command rang his bell.
A few things we can say for sure about McCain - he is obsessed with massive amnesty and perks for illegal aliens, he has hatred for Conservatives, he tells the most blatant lies, and he is nasty, creepy, and unethical.
One family of a MIA in Vietnam complained that he would not help.
At least the mantle of failure will rest with the Democrats rather than the Republicans. Because, in the final analysis, the only difference between John McCain and Hillary/Obama is that McCain wants to keep pouring more resources into Iraq.
While I do want victory in Iraq, it must not come at the cost of McCain's plan to sell out our nation to tens of millions of illegal invaders. And don't try to tell me he's not going to do that when he has Juan "La Raza" Hernandez on his payroll and has championed amnesty for illegals at every turn and refused to fortify our nation's borders.
What he will do after he is elected is another is an story.
Will he continue to stab Conservatives in the back or will he actually talk and act as a Conservative.
“If you don’t support his candidacy .. if you sit out the election .. just how much influence do you think you are going to have during his presidency?”
I believe that those planning to sit it out are not thinking that he will win. I personally believe that he will lose 40 states.
Once again, though, Hillary or Obama would be worse. I don’t like McCain, but Hillary hates this country. Obama, who knows. Possible Black Jimmy Carter. McCain will support the military, if nothing else. McCain is to the left of JFK. Hillary is to the left of Stalin.
Add Tancredo to that short list. Any one of those mee as VP would make it a little more difficult NOT to vote.
Of course he’d also have to immediately fire Juan Hernandez.
“And I am most especially sorry that I voted against the Cornyn ammendment, which would’ve kept criminal aliens off the amnesty rolls. I also apologize for my position on drilling the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. At the time of the declaration of my buffoonery, I didn’t know that the ANWR encompasses 103 million acres and that 12 million of those acres contain the petroleum that would cover our country, at present rates of consumption, for 60 years. Knowing that now, and that that petroleum is naturally of the light, sweet variety, requiring a minimum of purification that even our dilapidated refineries can comfortably handle, I retract my earlier stance. I have been informed that in order to access that petroleum, we need put up installations on only 20 THOUSAND acres - not 20 million. That is indeed a very, very small area to access 12 million acres. I was wrong. The caribou on those 20 thousand acres could and would easily move elsewhere on the refuge. They do, after all, have well more than 102.9 million acres from which to choose. How I could have been so profoundly ignorant is beyond me. It is in my nature to be wilfully so, and for most of my life, I have been proud of it, but now, at 71 years, I see that it is not the wisest of stances. You conservatives have much to teach me, and I will open my mind - maybe a bullet would help. Unlike Governor Romney, I won’t step aside for the good of the country, but with your help and discipline, I will get a hold of my ignorance, believing, as you do, that ignorance can be cured. Only stupidity is forever, and with your help and encouragement, I won’t be stupid.
And I would like to thank .............”

Yep...that is indeed McCain in a nutshell (no pun intended). Many thanks.
