Huckabee to get evangelical leader's nod (James Dobson)

James Dobson, one of the nation's most prominent evangelical Christian leaders, is about to endorse former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, The Associated Press has learned.

Dobson, founder of Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Focus on the Family, talked to the GOP presidential hopeful Thursday and later was to release a statement explaining his choice, said Gary Schneeberger, a spokesman for Dobson.

Huckabee had long sought Dobson's endorsement, believing he is the best fit to advance Dobson's conservative, moral worldview.

Until now, Dobson had never endorsed a GOP presidential hopeful during the primary campaign. But he ruled out front-runner John McCain in a blistering commentary on Super Tuesday, and on Thursday the fight for the GOP nomination narrowed to a two-man race between McCain and Huckabee, who is far behind in the delegate count but pledged to fight on. Mitt Romney, a third hopeful trying to claim the conservative label, dropped out of the race Thursday.

Dobson released a statement Tuesday that criticized McCain for his support of embryonic stem cell research, his opposition to a federal anti-gay marriage amendment and for his temper and use of foul language.

He said if McCain were the nominee, he would not cast a ballot for president for the first time in his life.

Dobson had left open the possibility that he would vote for either Romney or Huckabee, but endorsed neither.

Throughout the unsettled GOP race, Dobson picked his spots to signal that some candidates simply didn't meet his standards. Dobson wrote on a conservative news Web site that he wouldn't support former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani should he win the Republican nomination. Dobson called Giuliani an "unapologetic supporter of abortion on demand" and criticized him for signing a bill in 1997 creating domestic-partnership benefits in New York City.

At one point, Dobson said he'd consider voting for a minor-party candidate if faced with Giuliani as the nominee.

Later, Dobson ruled out former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson for his stands on issues. Dobson also said Thompson "has no passion, no zeal, and no apparent 'want to.'"

Dobson emphasizes that when he endorses candidates, he is doing so as a private citizen and not as a representative of Focus on the Family, a tax-exempt organization.

Its impossible for Huck to get enough delegates to win the nomination. Do the math.

I don’t like Dobson, Robertson, Falwell, black preachers, rabbis, muslim clerics or mormon leaders getting involved in politics.

Dr. Dobson is not, and never has been, any kind of preacher, minister, or church leader. After retirement, because he is a Christian and has always been as interested in families, politics, and this nation, as WE are, he founded Focus on the Family. He never asked to nor should be dictated to give up his right to freedom of speech, regardless of the size of the audience who may listen to him. You fault him only because he is a CHRISTIAN who won't SHUT UP. Well, too bad. He's a Christian, and a leader, and is called to SPEAK OUT.

Dobson earned a doctorate in child development from the University of Southern California in 1967. He was an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Southern California School of Medicine for fourteen years. He spent seventeen years on the staff of the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles in the Division of Child Development and Medical Genetics. Dobson is a licensed psychologist in California.

At the invitation of Presidents and Attorneys General, Dobson has also served on government advisory panels and testified at several government hearings.

He is a past member of The Council for National Policy (1982) and in the late 1980s Dobson helped form the Religious Alliance Against Pornography which included Roman Catholic priests and bishops.

As I see it, Huckabee was a failed preacher who went into the next con artist, dirtiest of businesses (Politics)—however, he ran around the country selling his religion background to con the believers into supporting him (enough of the fools did so, it would seem)-—worst of all kinds IMHO-—we are going down thesame path as all other great empires-—being destroyed from within dueto rotten leaders, greedy citizens and cowards who found our how to ‘vote themselves excess’ from the public treasury-—history does not look kindly on fools and cowards

Bingo, the natural progression. But, its too little too late for Huck.

Now maybe people can see what a scum mcCain is.

“As for Huckabee himself, he’s not as horrible as many say he is. His record is no worse than most Republican governors of the late 1990’s.”

Yeah, I’m sure we all remember when Tommy Thompson and John Engler were talking about putting God’s amendments into the constitution.

You can forget TX. John McCain will win overwhelmingly since Mitt is out. Trust me, it is fact.

“This is very good as the campain will not be againts McCain but for the issues Mike dominates I am encouraged that this too will hold McCains feet to the fire and will bid well when McCain breaks a leg. Go Mike Go!”

Honestly, we should all be backing Huck now big time. Even if you don’t like the guy and think he has no chance, hold McCain’s feet to the fire! Get a concession or two out of him, he can’t get to the White House without us, and he has a long way to go before we’ll even think about holding our noses for him.

“Romney would have been better served to go after Huckabee last week and stressed his social credentials in the south.”

There’s no way most Southern Evangelicals were ever going to vote for a Mormon. They’re way too bigoted for that.

You are wasting your posts on me. I’m not one of those “my candidate walks on water” supporters.

It's worth BS.

It’s possible that Huckabee started out actually hoping to win, but he hasn’t got a chance in the world of winning now. None. If he’s staying in, it’s only because McCain wants him to, to give the campaign a little color and excitement.

Social conservatives have a huge impact in TX and many of them will vote for Huckabee.

Actually, McCain has to win 40% of the remaining delegates to secure the nomination outright. The lion’s share of his support came from big, dumb blue states (New York, New Jersey, California) - but they’re over, from here on out we get a bevy of red states where he simply doesn’t have that much appeal.

I love Dr. Dobson and buy many of his materials. I will continue to do so, because his ministry is awesome.

But politically, this is:

He was not a “failed preacher.” His congregation was quite large and he was the head of the AR Southern Baptists before he left for politics. He then served as governor of his state for 10 1/2 years, quite popular with his constituents.

Look, if you don’t like Christians in politics, that’s fine. But your character assassination of Huckabee is something I would expect on the Daily Kos, not Free Republic.

"Social conservatives"

"Social conservatives" has now joined the ranks of "religion of peace", "undocumented immigrants", "progressives", and "gay"....

Make up all the nice words you want - everyone knows what you mean.

Yeah, Huck might pick up another state or two. It won't be enough, though.

Actually, I think individual preachers (with the blessing of their leadership) should stand up for what they believe in.....but, as for throwing support from the TOP of an organization....NO.....it’s like a UNION telling its members who they support.
