Republican John McCain asked disgruntled conservatives to support his presidential bid on Thursday, shortly after Mitt Romney ended his struggling campaign and made McCain the all-but-certain nominee.
McCain assured a conference of conservative activists he was one of them, citing his commitment to win in Iraq, halt Iran's nuclear ambitions and rein in the federal government while drawing sharp contrasts with potential Democratic opponents Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.
McCain's speech, which drew boos on the topic of illegal immigration, followed by a few hours Romney's surprise announcement at the conference that he was ending his run to allow Republicans to focus on the November election.
"I feel I have to now stand aside, for our party and for our country," the former Massachusetts governor told the shocked crowd, some of whom gasped and shouted "No, no!" in response.

I may write in Ronald Reagan. If he gets two or three percent of the vote and McCain looses by 1.75%, he’ll get the message. So will the party.
If by chance this should catch on and Reagan get 10% of the vote, the message would be just that much more potent.
I think George Allen would make a big difference. And SolidWood mentioned Michael Steele. Another awesome pick.

You’re probably staying home then. The only reason Huckster is still in the race is to make it impossible for McCain to choose anyone else. He knows he can’t win a general election.
I have close family in the military. I would never want them to be under McCain. McCain has mental problems. He is creepy and scary and his lying is outrageous. Who knows what he will do? He obviously is not competent to fight WOT - just look at his comments regarding terrorists. And he voted against the Cornyn amendment - he wants to admit terrorists to this country. This is insane. No one who is concerned with the future of this country would hold his position on amnesty. He has opposed protecting our borders.

This is gonna be the most pointless election in my lifetime.We get to pick their socialist or ours-just vote the state and local issues and that’s the best we can do.
First of all, I am not a son, I am a daughter, and yeah I know what stubborn is, I come from a long line of stubborn American folks.

George Allen, Michael Steele. You have got to be kidding. Neither of these guys could carry their own states.
Here’s what I’ve been thinking today. I might be pursuaded to think differently, but for right now:
A president needs to be able to work with Congress in order to accomplish most things, right?
John McCain will be an EFFECTIVE president. He has a track record of compromise in the Senate and he has proven that he can GET THINGS DONE. But the things he wants to do are almost all things that I DON’T LIKE.
On the other hand, Hillary hasn’t really been able to accomplish much. And she has the charisma of cold dog slobber. I like her ideas even less than McCain’s, but as a completely INEFFECTIVE president, she won’t be able to get much of anything done. It’s possible that she will actually do less damage than McCain.
In this case of the bad candidate versus the worse candidate, I am thinking it would be best to vote for the one LEAST likely to accomplish anything. At least for now, gridlock is good.
But Obama is an unknown quantity. He has natural charisma coming out his ears and that could make him somewhat more effective than Hillary. I don’t want that, so I’m leaning towards voting for Hillary in the Texas primary in an effort to try to elect the least effective candidate possible as the next president.
I guess it’s risky, but I’m not liking any of the options right now.
