With Romney's pull-out (suspension, anyway), and barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.
I didn't see any prior threads devoted to discussing a range of VP options. (I did see some suggesting particular people, like Condi Rice.)
As I see it, McCain SHOULD want to address three factors with his VP pick, although the 3d is far behind the first 2:
1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.
2. Relative Youth. McCain's age is a factor, making his VP pick more important than such picks usually are: McCain is much more likely than most presidents to become incapacitated, just as an actuarial matter.
3. A Popular Figure in a Swing State. Although this isn't as important, I note that there is little *geographic* benefit to picking, say, Gov. Perry of TX, because TX is going to go GOP anyway.
Thoughts?
Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.
I thought Buckwheat was dead?
Unless he is willing to quit at some point after getting elected, I'm not sure it does.
Phil Gramm.
Heaven knows we need a Phd in Econ. He introduced the Life Amendment every year he was in Congress. Right on all the issues. One of the few conservatives that McCain a) likes and b) listens to. And he is outstanding in a debate.
Just trying to make lemonade out of the pile of lemons we have been handed.

On the one hand, you and Rove are absolutely correct that the most important factor — by FAR more than half the pie-chart — is the POTUS nominee, not the VP.
But I think you overstate it when you say the VP doesn’t matter at all, or, at least, can NEVER matter. Yes, there are plenty of VP-pickings that were made in hopes of this or that benefit, which didn’t pay off. That doesn’t show that the VP can’t help a little around the edges in some elections.
Yes they will fit right in with all the other pro-life, anti gay, pro-military, pro-gun Democrats....take a real look a Huckabee’s record and not the establishment propaganda
The result of their campaign will be the same. Maybe Dole is too radical for McAmnesty. I think he should choose someone with a like mind .... someone like ....
VINCENTE FOX
I would go with Condi Rice. She is reliable on the War and would appease the conservatives.
I will even bet on it. Any takers?
If (when) McCain pays back... um, picks Huckabee, it’ll seal our parties’ doom. It’s that self-aggrandizing Bible-thumper (and his followers) who are responsible for vaulting McLame into the top spot to begin with.
Personally, I’d love to see Jeff Sessions.
i have heard good things about Gov Pawlenty in Minnessotta but georgraphically i would think McCain would need a Southerner or Border Stater. Gov Crist in FL is too much of a moderate from i understand but is from a Southern swing state. Haley Barbour maybe?
She’d be a great political asset.
I love Jindal, but it may be TOO soon for him. He only just got sworn in as LA’s post-Blanco governor and is about half McCain’s age.
That all being said, his addition to the ticket would make me MUCH more enthused about it — and it’d be particularly shrewd if young Obama ends up with the DEM nom, although I doubt Obama will.
