Suggest McCain's VP Pick (VANITY)

With Romney's pull-out (suspension, anyway), and barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.

I didn't see any prior threads devoted to discussing a range of VP options. (I did see some suggesting particular people, like Condi Rice.)

As I see it, McCain SHOULD want to address three factors with his VP pick, although the 3d is far behind the first 2:

1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.

2. Relative Youth. McCain's age is a factor, making his VP pick more important than such picks usually are: McCain is much more likely than most presidents to become incapacitated, just as an actuarial matter.

3. A Popular Figure in a Swing State. Although this isn't as important, I note that there is little *geographic* benefit to picking, say, Gov. Perry of TX, because TX is going to go GOP anyway.

Thoughts?

I was a Fredhead, but I always thought the best man for the #2 spot would be J.C. Watts. He isn’t a senator, he’s impeccably conservative and still young, and he left Congress before Cunningham and Foley, so he cannot be tarred with any of those scandals. Even though he played for the hated Sooners I say this.
Remember that the one place McCain is conservative is in the area of life. This election has grave implications for millions of unborn children, so I will hold my nose and punch that hole.

McCain is going to need big help in swing states in the South:

Louisiana. Florida. Tennessee. Virginia. Arkansas. Missouri and West Virginia, too.

Romney. He needs someone who’s youthful, conservative, and has lots of money.

He’s going to pick Huckabee and I’m going to vote for the Democratic candidate with balls enough to admit he’s/she’s a democrat rather than these two Democrats in Republican dresses.

Romney......he carries the votes with him and would make a great President when McCain kicks off. Send the bible thumping Huckster down the road. Nothing wrong with religion but don’s bring it to the race.

I agree on not picking Rick Perry...he’s just another “compassionate” guy...we need a real conservative to balance out McCain.

Age and health issues aside, I’m going with Fred Thompson.

He might not add much to the ticket, but he’ll be there in 4 years ready to be a real president and pick up the pieces of the McCain disaster-to-be.

What McCain SHOULD do and what he WILL do are two separate matters entirely. My prediction is that he will choose a liberal leftist RINO as a running mate (”who else would they have to vote for?”) as a syncophantic yes-man. True, he is more likely than most to not finish out his term, based on his age and poor health. But with all the spitting on conservatives he has engaged in over the span of his career, he probably will not choose a “balancer” so much as a mini-me to be his veep. JMHO.

I got it - McCain can pick hill, and hill can pick mccain.........and thus the dems and the pubs will be married and we will have ONE national party.

Is that “brilliant” VP candidate Ross Perot had in 1992 still around?

I predict it will be Huckabee. Huckbee’s delegates give a proven voting base.

A voting base in states that would give their electoral votes to the GOP if it ran an Osama bin Laden/Charles Manson ticket is irrelevant.
