American Life League: Do Not Remove Lauren’s Feeding Tube

WASHINGTON, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Judie Brown, president of American Life League, released the following statement concerning an order by Delaware Court of Chancery Master Sam Glasscockon to give guardianship of Lauren Richardson to her mother, who wants to remove Lauren's feeding tube.

Lauren is 23 years of age and, due to a heroin overdose, is now in a persistent vegetative state. At the time of the overdose, Lauren was expecting the birth of her baby and reports indicate that she was kept alive to allow her to give birth, which she did in February of last year. Her daughter is now about to celebrate her first birthday, but Lauren may never have another birthday.

Of interest is the fact that, during the pregnancy, Lauren relied on feeding tubes and a breathing machine to keep her alive. Today Lauren has a feeding tube only. But there is a struggle going on regarding whether or not Lauren will live or die.

Lauren's case is more than a sad commentary on the plight of a family battling over what each of the opponents believes would be in her best interest. Her story is a testimony to the growing philosophy in this country that some, because of their condition, are better off dead than alive.

Like Terri Schiavo before her, Lauren is not dying nor is she in a terminal condition. She has been diagnosed as someone in a persistent vegetative state, someone who is very much alive but locked in her body and unable to express her desires to anyone. The only thing Lauren is relying on is a feeding tube without which she will starve to death. Lauren's mother, who is Laurens guardian, wants the feeding tube removed while Lauren's father is fighting to keep Lauren alive.

This family is in our prayers. We hope that, in the interest of respecting Lauren's dignity as a human being whose future improvement or lack thereof is known only to God, the court will listen carefully to those who argue in favor of Lauren's right to life. It is a tragedy beyond description when any human beings fate rests solely on the subjective opinion of others, some of whom truly believe that patients like Lauren have no quality of life and therefore are better off dead.

Romney’ opinion on the Terry Schiavo case: Let the courts force euthanasia.

On March 10th, Romney was questioned on television about the Terri Schiavo case in which heroic efforts were made by the State and by Congress to save her life. Without his professional handlers by his side to tell him what to say, here what the press reported him as saying:

He’s campaigning hard for support from Republican socialconservatives, but presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Saturday he disagreed with the government’s intervention in the Terri Schiavo case. ‘I think it’s probably best to leave these kinds of matters in the hands of the courts.’

However, this view is consistent with his abortion stance. Forget about the life involved, let the people decide or let the courts decide. Once again, Romney doesn’t seem to understand the moral implications involved here.

When a person isn’t a real conservative, they have a tough time figuring out what to say on subjects that their handlers haven’t prepped them on.

“I think that the motivation of my colleagues is that we want to give this young woman’s family a chance to care for her for as long as she lives,” - McCain

Now there's a real bold and decisive statement! Way to make a stand, Senator!!! /s

I'm not a medical expert, but as I mentioned in a previous Lauren thread, although the following article doesn't mention a coma, firefighter Donald Herbert was evidently in such a state for about 10 years before he woke up.

You're one of the few voices of reason here. I have made my wishes known to my husband and my parents. My wishes are based on my principles and ethics while being of sound mind. There's no way someone will go broke maintaining my body or give up their own lives to do it. If I'm worth anything at that time I've also made clear where my stuff will go. No one should put this burden on anyone else.

I agree, it's a family decision not a government one.

“I have made my wishes known to my husband and my parents.”

Just make sure that you, your husband, and your parents know what they’re doing, and don’t be swayed by doctors or lawyers, if you ever decide to get involved with them. Please do your own research.

For example, if you say: “I don’t want to be on a respirator,” it could mean one thing if it would only prolong an imminent death for months or years, and another thing if it would only be needed for 48 or more hours after an accident, and one could be restored to normal health.

I’m glad you’ve made your wishes know to your husband and parents, rather than lawyers.

I realize the reason for her being in the state she is is moot, but as the result of a heroin overdose induced coma, while pregnant, how did SHE feel about the quality of life and the saftety etc of her unborn child?

After viewing that, the people trying to starve Lauren to death to get her out of their way should be placed in boxes and prevented from having water or food for a week or so. Lauren is severely retarded now, but that video attests to her not being in a PVS. Of course, that is the land of Biden-think: she should be exterminated to prevent a drain on the tax revenues collected, by liberal reasoning.

I thought about that, too. The poor baby was born an addict, I believe. So wrong.

I don't know and it isn't relevant.

It may not be relevant to the moral question, but it is always relevant to how much and what kind of care a person gets.

You and I will never get the same care that the wealthy get. A homeless down and outer will never get as much or the same level of care that this woman already has received.

If these folks didn't make plans for her expensive care, they may not have any say in how much additional care she gets from welfare sources.

Take me, for example, my care in a serious medical situation will be limited by the financial resources I can bring to the table.

I will never have the luxury of getting as much medical care as this woman already has reeived.

Now, tell me that doesn't matter.

The research I’ve done on feeding tubes indicates that the cost is only a few hundred dollars a day, this is very minimal by health care standards. Additionally, patients can usually be taken home and their families can do everything (a nurse just needs to check in a few times a month). There is NO REASON that any person in the US should die of starvation and dehydration.

The new threshold for who lives or dies should not be that THE PERSON IS NOT THE SAME. That's what this is about. Laura is not the same maybe in a lot of ways but that's no reason to starve/dehydrate her to death. Love her the way she is and let her Dad take care of her! I saw her VIDEO and she's conscious and breathes on her own.
