Reagan Library Republican Presidential Debate: January 30, 2008

SIMI VALLEY, California (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopefuls will face off Wednesday night without a familiar face as ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is expected to drop out and endorse front-runner Sen. John McCain.

The remaining candidates will take the stage in a debate -- sponsored by CNN, the Los Angeles Times and Politico -- beginning at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday.

The event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, follows McCain's Tuesday night win in the Florida primary.

McCain topped former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 36 percent to 31 percent in the hotly contested race.

Giuliani placed third with 15 percent of the vote, followed closely by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 14 percent, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas was fifth with 3 percent.

Giuliani is expected to end his White House bid and endorse McCain at a campaign event in California later Wednesday, Republican Party sources said.

Minus Giuliani, the debate will be a four-candidate affair -- McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Paul -- with CNN's Anderson Cooper moderating.

I agree totally...

Reagan made bad with O'connor...But, he is still the best president ever....Of course he would never get elected today if it were up to the people on this forum.

What a long winded, meandering reply, void of substance and purpose. But I hear ya. Even though he is no conservative, you support Willard. I’m not impressed.

Besides, HillaryCare and RomneyCare are twin liberal proposals to nationalize US health care. Something no Constitutional conservative would ever think of supporting.

Stopping all liberals --- Democrat or Republican --- is one of my political objectives. Also advancing conservatism is another of my objectives and just so happens to be the #1 goal of Free Republic too.

True. This may sound weird, but I’m going to do what I can to help Romney, and trust that God knows there’s more than 50 people in this Country worth saving—and work his miracles for us and our Country’s best interests again. Faith and hard work is a tough combo to beat.

I have an eery feeling that McCain may not make it four years. I don’t mean assasination but health problems. I wish him good health but just not as President. I don’t even think he can win against the Democrats.....really! What do you think?

What is that limp in/on his left cheek ? Looks like he’s chewing tobacco.

IMO, it's cancer, or something similar.

While Romney's embrace of timetable terminology seemed to put some distance between himself and Bush, the former Massachusetts governor also made it clear that he does not support efforts on the part of the Democratic Congress to establish a public timetable.

--snip--

Romney did not indicate how the timetables he favors would be kept private nor did he indicate what steps he thinks the United States should take if the Iraqi government were to fail to meet the privately established timetables and milestones.

The timetables would be private until the appeared on the front page of the New York Times.

Yep - per mcCain's logic, mcCain was laying the ground for abandoning Iraq.

Asked what penalty would be imposed if Iraq failed to meet his benchmarks, he said: "I think everybody knows the consequences. Haven't met the benchmarks? Obviously, then, we're not able to complete the mission. Then you have to examine your options."

I think McCain is over his prime, and when it gets to debating Democrats, he will also be debating the Democrat Majority Press like CNN, Matthews, Russert, Oberman, Blitzer ect. I don’t see him winning except for the Clinton hate factor.

Romney is getting better and better at this. He absolutely destroyed Queeg tonight. If I were Mitt, I’d start thinking about running as an independent. He’s got the cash to do it.

Good idea. Especially after McCain's snide comments tonight about Mitt's money.

The MSM networks covering for McCain is disturbing also. I feel like I’m on an alternate universe, other than the MSM talking heads, discussing the debate tonight. They are relentlessly pushing McCain and praising his performance and talking about his momentum. McCain was horrible tonight.

Chris Matthews is the absolute worst...just unbearable. He WORSHIPS the man.

yea.. they ALL blew this question: Reagan THOUGHT he knew what he was getting with O’Connor... he was wrong. Ok.. that happens. Reagan was a very trusting person.

I believe, RR would now admit he was NOT happy with Sandra Day O’Connor. And, it disturbs me greatly that McCain thinks she was great.

So far, the “focus groups” I have watched have had absolutely nothing in common with what happened in the elections. The one in NH seemed staged to be Pro-Romney, the one in SC seemed staged to be Pro-Thompson, but neither won when voters came out.

We have had too many of these debates. What more can we possibly learn about these guys? McCain is a war hero, strong on the war against the islamo-fascists, weak just about everywhere else. Romney is a slick businessman/politician with all the answers and a lot of flip flopping baggage, Huckabee is the social conservative who has a lot of domestic experience as governor, but lacks any real foreign experience and Ron Paul is ...... Ron Paul.
