Reagan Library Republican Presidential Debate: January 30, 2008

SIMI VALLEY, California (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopefuls will face off Wednesday night without a familiar face as ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is expected to drop out and endorse front-runner Sen. John McCain.

The remaining candidates will take the stage in a debate -- sponsored by CNN, the Los Angeles Times and Politico -- beginning at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday.

The event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, follows McCain's Tuesday night win in the Florida primary.

McCain topped former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 36 percent to 31 percent in the hotly contested race.

Giuliani placed third with 15 percent of the vote, followed closely by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 14 percent, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas was fifth with 3 percent.

Giuliani is expected to end his White House bid and endorse McCain at a campaign event in California later Wednesday, Republican Party sources said.

Minus Giuliani, the debate will be a four-candidate affair -- McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Paul -- with CNN's Anderson Cooper moderating.

That's very true. Kennedy was the last Senator elected that wasn't a VP first. Harding was the one before him. They're few and far between. Senators that had been a VP and governors are the most common.

Isn’t melanoma deadly? An acquaintance was treated for it, appeared well, and a short time later was dead. Maybe that explains why McCain is feeble. I saw him the other week being helped by his wife to deplane and shuffled along. Tonight he did not look this feeble, maybe took medicine. But his grinning and glaring was like that of a mental patient listening to voices in his head.

My answer to your question would be, what has that knowledge have to do with the qualifications of being POTUS? The POTUS is unique in having to swear to uphold and protect the Constitution of the US. That is the quality that should be honed in this vetting process. Not that he knows who xyz of which petty state with this particular title or nuanced tick did this or that, or that he follows very special details of petty undeclared missions of the Greater State of the US. Not as a Nation but as a Country should the new POTUS aspire. Screw Abu. Bring troops back not in defeat but as our Fortress America and victory will be assured against the whatever is their latest king of their dunghill.

I agree. But I don't think "carrying the South" really matters to Southerners like it used to.

John Edwards, with his syrupy twang, couldn't even carry his own state 2004. And Algore couldn't deliver Tennessee in 2000.

A good candidate is a good candidate and Southerners will support him, no matter where he was born.
