Reagan Library Republican Presidential Debate: January 30, 2008

SIMI VALLEY, California (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopefuls will face off Wednesday night without a familiar face as ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is expected to drop out and endorse front-runner Sen. John McCain.

The remaining candidates will take the stage in a debate -- sponsored by CNN, the Los Angeles Times and Politico -- beginning at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday.

The event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, follows McCain's Tuesday night win in the Florida primary.

McCain topped former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 36 percent to 31 percent in the hotly contested race.

Giuliani placed third with 15 percent of the vote, followed closely by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 14 percent, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas was fifth with 3 percent.

Giuliani is expected to end his White House bid and endorse McCain at a campaign event in California later Wednesday, Republican Party sources said.

Minus Giuliani, the debate will be a four-candidate affair -- McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Paul -- with CNN's Anderson Cooper moderating.

Was it just me or did it appear like Anderson Cooper was going out of his way to give McCain extra time or opportunities to respond?

Help me out here because I’m REALLY biased against McStain, but, did he just completely derail his run tonight with the most pathetic “debate” ever, but mumbling, bumbling, attacking, not answering questions, or answering questions with the wrong answer?

Hmmm. It’ll be interesting to see what affect his endorsement of McCain will have in California then. Thanks for the reply!

I think Romney cleaned clocks tonight, was forceful and had the answer to everything;

Huckabee 2nd place - I liked his answer about California regulations and states rights - if it doesn’t work the other states will steal Arnold’s jobs away!

Paul distant 3rd - got his agenda in when he was given a chance to speak although he used the word “Empire” a little to much for comfort (Is that you Noam?)

McLame - Big loser of the night; if people actually watched the debate they would have been turned off big time. Unfortuately I think the Arnold and Giulianni endorsements will have a much bigger effect on the race than this debate.

Super Tuesday is not a forgone conclusion - it may come down to whether Huckabee people jump ship and if so, where do they jump.

Romney definitely won this but the press will bury it and the endorsement machine will roll on. I actually think Cooper slipped in the part about Arnold endorsing McCain at the end because McCain did so badly, maybe it was an attempt to put a good face on it by revealing the endorsement.

Speaking of Ahnald, Anderson Cooper mentioned that he would be endorsing McInsane tomorrow. I wonder how he would know this at this point. More examples of how Ahnald is not a conservative?

See the writing. It says,
Romney was for deadlines.
Romney was for pulling out of Iraq.
Romney is Harry Reid.

Ron won my vote tonight. Mitt’s just a posing RINO.

I know Ron Paul doesn't know who Abu Abbas, Abu Nidal and Zarqawi are. I also know he doesn't know whoch one of those was responsible for murderering one of your fellow citizens in a wheelchair and dumping him overboard. I'm also sure that he doesn't know that all three were given sanctuary in Iraq by Saddam Hussein who was concurrently paying bounty for the heads of Jews and Americans.

My question to you is this, do you know any of that and if you do is it your psotion that we allow terrorists to kill Americans at their leisure and then live in sanctuary cities like Bgahdad untouched in perpetuity?

It's not so much McCain's policies, but rather his expressed contempt for businessmen.

From his call to CEOs, "You've made your money, now come serve your country." to his disdain for Romney's experience "managing for profit" to his aping of Huckabee's rhetoric bashing businessmen for laying people off, John McCain displayed a hostility to those who do the work of making America prosperous.

I’m not an admirer of Huckabee, but his ending speech was the best of all of them. One thing I noticed, as they were talking of President Reagan, a lack of humor. Mcpain was the same painful name dropper, I’m qualified because I was shot down, I was in the military, I know how to lead etc, etc., Romeny, I don’t think did himself a favor. He didn’t mention he helped Salt Lake City survive the Olympics because of his business acumen, the Olympics would not have been in Utah, but did because of his expertise. I personally think a little humor would go a long way during these so-called debates. Ron Paul, was Ron Paul.

If Romney picked a good running mate, they could take the South. If McCain is the nominee, which looks like the media is trying now to crown him, I will not vote in the election. I know thats a terrible thing to say....but I don’t like him and I have watched him in the Senate constantly huddling with Democrats.

He is a Democrat in Repulican clothing! I have always voted but I will sit this one out I am mighty afraid!
