McCain beats Romney in Florida GOP race

MIAMI - Sen. John McCain won a breakthrough triumph in the Florida Republican primary Tuesday night, edging past former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and seizing precious campaign momentum for next week's string of contests across 21 states.

"It shows one thing: I'm the conservative leader who can unite the party," the Arizona senator said in a brief interview with The Associated Press. "It's a very significant boost, but I think we've got a tough week ahead and a lot of states to come."

The victory was worth 57 national convention delegates for McCain, a winner-take-all's haul and the largest single prize to date in the race.

Rudy Giuliani was in third place, his best showing of the campaign but possibly not good enough to warrant continuing.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee trailed but told supporters he would forge on.

i think that picture of mccain sitting next to hillary and them both looking like the cat that stole the cream is telling.

i think most of these political bozos don’t care which side wins so long as they can stay in a position of power. its all just a game..... and america has become so far out of touch with what it used to be.

The media needs to go. the liberals need to go. and i am not kidding about the media it would be the greatest healing balm EVER to this country if there was no more tv.

Sad thing is you are probably right. Unless McCain has a lucid moment.

2008 has basically become irrelevant for Conservatives.

Store up and shore up until 2012.

Thanks.
I’m very concerned that the high water mark for Consevatives, and the time needed to wake up, may both have passed us by.

I think it is going to be tight.

Seems to me that because things have been so good for so long in the economy and such that people have too much time on their hands to play with vanity candidates and pet issues. Everyone has forgotten how crappy things were in the late 70s. Until that focus is regained the voters will be all over the place, instead of focused on the bread and butter issues as a whole.

I just hope we still have the option to elect a real conservative leader by the time the kiddies realize we needed one all along.

I say we throw our money together, buy an island from some third world country, and start a new country.

Even if that were true, and it’s completely contrary to what has been reported, many Democrats have admitted switching their registration prior to the 30 day limit, since their votes as Democrats would count for nothing, so they decided to influence the Republican primary instead.

Many Independents did the same, apparently.

The exit polls clearly indicate only 80% of voters in the Republican primary were Republicans.

Taking over California and seceding would be my first choice. Short of that, I'm down with the island.

Yes, and Catholics are the majority in Rhode Island, Asians are the majority in Hawaii, and English Americans are a very small minority of the total population. Your point?

I was a political activist in Miami-Dade County for three years when I was living down there. Most Cuban exiles (and second generation Cuban Americans) don't care about the "illegal" issue, and those that do are anti-illegal (especially if they are Haitian).

South Florida's hispanic population is more economically/culturally/racially diverse than, say, Arizona. You have everything from wealthy Colombian bankers to poor Indian peasants from Guatemala who do all the schlepp work. You really can't generalize down there.

The two biggest hispanic voting blocks in Florida are Cubans in South Florida and Puerto Ricans in Central Florida. Most of the other groups have been slow to register. We really should cultivate the anti-Chavez Venezuelans and the white collar Colombians.

A damn shame that the only Latinos most folks on the west Coast and in North Florida encounter are semiliterate Guatemalans who can barely speak Spanish, let alone English.

Let’s not give up the ship before it sinks. In a two-man Republican race, Romney emerges as a clear winner. With Huckabee’s votes alone — almost all right-wing conservative, as opposed to McCain left wing — Romney would have taken Florida by a wide margin. Super Tuesday will certainly be more of a two man race with Huckaby and Giuliani out of it, whether technically or for all practical purposes. I believe Romney will fare well then.

I’m wondering if McCain didn’t have a pact with Giuliani from the beginning to draw the most conservative votes in Florida, splitting them and providing the victory for the liberal McCain.

Don’t throw in the towel just yet!

there are hundreds of thousands of illegal alien Cubans in Florida

Oh brother, where to begin:

1. As tx-eggman pointed out, Cubans are not "illegal" except in exceptional circumstances.

2. Cubans are now a minority of the Hispanic population in Florida.

3. Many, if not most Cubans, are in white collar professions. This is especially true of second generation Cuban Americans.

4. Most of the "illegals", per ICE, that you tend to encounter in Florida are from Guatemala, Haiti, or Mexico.

But hey "anyone with the last name Suarez is the same" and ignorance is bliss!

How do American conservatives not know this stuff?
I mean, its been the law of the land since I can remember.
The only illegal Cubans I ever heard of are cigars.

Just ruminating, I guess.

I never thought I’d say this, but I KNOW I won’t vote for McCain EVER. And I might vote democratic as well. I cannot believe that the man who has tried to destroy the party at every turn is going to be our nominee - or so it seems.

McCain, as President, would be many times more destructive to unity and conservatives than Bush was. He will appoint Lindsay Graham as party chair, he will tear down the fences that have been built (as little as there is), and he will remove all reasonable quotas on immigraiton.

He is a cancer, a snake, and he is EVIL. I will not vote for him...never.

How many people do you figure it would require to turn California?

I've got to do the math, but my guess would be 5 million.

No it wasn’t. 1% is actually high. It really is .08144%.
