‘Billary’ versus Obama (Thomas Sowell)
Jewish World Review ^ | January 29, 2008 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 01/28/2008 7:39:39 PM PST by jazusamo

Whatever one may think about Barack Obama as a candidate or as a potential President, his candidacy has brought something new to the American political scene.

His stunning victory in the Iowa caucuses, in a state where more than 90 percent of the population is white, was an unmistakable signal that racism is not the invincible thing that some seem to think it is.

Unlike Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton before him, Obama has not been running as a black candidate for symbolic purposes but as a serious contender who happens to be black.

Into this upbeat national scene Bill and Hillary Clinton have brought race back as one of their many sleazy tactics to try to win in any way possible, whether clean or dirty.

First, there were the surrogates bringing up youthful peccadillos that Obama had already admitted in his autobiography. They milked this for all it was worth.

First there was the innuendo, which got media coverage. Then came the claim that the Clintons had nothing to do with the innuendo, which got more media time.

Then came the claim from the surrogate that his statement was misinterpreted, which got still more media time.

But these cheap shots have been by no means as poisonous as Bill Clinton's obvious attempts to reduce Obama to just a black candidate.

Even after much of the media had gotten on him for this, Bill Clinton returned to that theme after Hillary lost the South Carolina primary big time, by saying that Jesse Jackson had won South Carolina before.

It is not that the Clintons are racists. It is just that they will use whatever they want, in order to get whatever they want — and the effect on the country does not bother them.

"Thomas Sowell/Walter Williams 2008" In either order I'd support that ticket. Would that this nation only be so worthy.

They are not actors on a political stage. Sowell and Williams are the real deal. They both are very superior intellects with the ability to convey their logic with simplicity. When they write or speak there is not one word extra nor one word two few. Their love of our great nation is without question or doubt. As you said, "we should be so worthy" to vote for these two.

after all, he is black (I think), and he is a candidate. So...that does make him a "black candidate," doesn't it?
. . . and Jesse Jackson was black, and he was a candidate. So . . . that makes Obamma exactly like Jesse Jackson, doesn't it? </sarcasm>

If you don't see the racism in that logic - which is precisely the logic x42 was using to subvert Obamma's challenge to his wife - well, you need a wakeup call.

i think blacks view Obama as one of their own

and I don’t think that is racist....it’s how the world ticks usually

but Obama is still half-white.

Of course blacks view Obama as one of their own - and of course that is racist.

And of course that is how the world ticks usually . . .

And of course if Thomas Sowell says anything to the contrary to that, I would almost certainly change my mind.

The big question is WHY isn’t Obama running as a WHITE CANDIDATE?

After all, genetically, he’s 50% WHITE and 50% BLACK. Yet his PERSONAL CULTURE is more WHITE than BLACK as a result of his upbringing in a WHITE FAMILY and mostly affluent WHITE Hawaii neighborhood.

Therefore the essence of OBAMA (genes & culture) on balance, is more WHITE than BLACK. Culturally he has VERY LITTLE IN COMMON with the AMERICAN Blacks!!!

Well, he does share with too many blacks (and too many whites, nowadays) the misfortune of having grown up in a family which did not include his biological father.

But you are right in that his mother was white. Of course, she was also a liberal, and that's true of most blacks as well. But anyone with "a drop of" black genetic heritage will be considered "black." And benefit from the solidarity of others similarly categorized. Sowell has pointed out that American blacks consider Jamaican blacks to be "black Jews" because, tho racially indistinguishable from their American cousins, they are culturally distinct and have an entrepreneurial mindset. Colin Powell comes from a family of Jamaican immigrants, and that helps explain why he's more accepting of, and acceptable to, mainstream American culture than your typical "inner city" black is.

I once heard Walter Williams say that the Achilles heal of liberals is that they believe that Blacks are too stupid, and Whites are too mean-spirited, to be able to run their own lives.

If Edwards will drop out I would think that the Hill should be able to slide on to home.

Although, I would much prefer to listen to Obama than Hillary...

...I agree with both the above comments...Hillary will be the nominee, all this primary stuff being entertainment for now, and, with the Dems being prohibitive favorites in the general election, I will be ill used from having to listen to her screeching voice from the White House...

Does anyone think this “rift” in the Democratic Party will last?

My sense is that Hillary will be determined to be the eventual nominee after the Texas and Ohio Primaries in March. By about August, Massah Bill will get all the angry Blacks back onto the Dem Plantation; Hillary will pick Obama as her running mate and, well, you take it from there.

“[Obama’s] stunning victory in the Iowa caucuses, in a state where more than 90 percent of the population is white, was an unmistakable signal that racism is not the invincible thing that [The Leftist Media][want us to] think it is.”

One rarely has to correct Mr. Sowell on anything, but this is closer to the TRUTH. :)

It is not that the Clintons are racists.

I was with him up to this point. I'm not sure he's right about this one. Not sure he's wrong, either, they could be so mad for power they care nothing about race.

Bill Clintoon was destined to be the first Socialist/Communist Dictator of the Union of Socialist States! He blew, (as did Monica), and his Identical Ideologue aka Hillary Clinton is now in the running.

As far as I'm concerned they're both murderers and the victims of Waco, Vince Foster and the TWA 800 Shoot Down cry out for Justice!

We must thwart their plans and insure that "Truth Justice and the American Way prevail!"

“and how the lap dogs of the Drive By Media continuously cover for them”

For the first time, though, other scumbags are bailing on them. They used to be able to count on the support of every scumbag in the country. Not any more. Much scumbag loyalty is being transferred to Comrade Hussein.

I think it could be said that the following is true:It is not that the Clintons are racists/liberals/Democrats. It is just that they will use whatever they want, in order to get whatever they want — and the effect on the country does not bother them.

Even though they have co-opted the Democrats, they are not at their core, Democrats. What they are is simply power-hungry...and had the opportunity to power existed in any other party, they could have as well been in that party.

There are many areas of example, but look at the way that they conducted foreign policy - always with an eye towards empowering themselves, with no interest otherwise.

I think that Obama is merely wrong. I don't get the impression he is overtly evil.

I'm sorry, I do not see racism in calling a black candidate a black candidate.

I am not moved by Mr. Sowell's objection.

There are plenty of objectionable things about Mr. Clinton's antics, but Sowell's argument needs developing.

my feelings too

and I never hardly disagree with Sowell

i admired him for disagreeing with Clarence on the cross lighting SCOTUS decision for instance

and he has done actual studies on cultural IQs....something many here lament

but I sorta diverge with him here.
