When scientists found out that chimps had better memories than students, there were unkind comments about the calibre of the human competition they faced.
But now an ape has gone one better, trouncing British memory champion Ben Pridmore.
Ayumu, a seven-year-old male brought up in captivity in Japan, did three times as well as Mr Pridmore at a computer game which involved remembering the position of numbers on a screen.
And that's no mean feat - the 30-year-old accountant from Derby is capable of memorising the order of a shuffled pack of cards in under 30 seconds.

Once you’ve had kids, you’re immediately disqualified from all memory contests.
;)
LOL! My mom used to tell me that -- that parenting was bad for your concentration. Then one day when I was around 22 or so, I found out she could memorize a shuffled deck of cards. You could have knocked me over. How come she never mentioned it before? She shrugged and said it wasn't important. Just one of those things. (!)
I wonder how it would do against those kids that memorize pi to ad infinitum and spend hours reciting it.
Yes, but does he have a 250GB Hard Drive?
We’ll be working for the chimps one day. Yawn. I hope they get cable.
Silly scientists.
That’s why humans have the yellow pages.
I am suspicious of the results. This almost seems like a John Henry type of situation, where the ape was trained for one purpose, but the human can do a much greater variety of tasks.
That said, I heard somewhere that human memory sacrificed factual information for concepts. Why memorize every even number when you can memorize the concept of counting up by 2?
BWHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Otto: “Apes don’t read Nietzsche!”
Wanda: “Yes they DO, Otto, they just don’t understand it! ...”
This is not new. It was posted here several weeks or months ago.
The article is pure monkey droppings.
Memory is one small capability of the mind. The ability to remember foolish nonsense is no indicator of intelligence.
I don’t give one monkey’s ass if a monkey can remember more stupid things than me!
This is just one more example of some scientists trying desperately to “prove” that human intelligence is really no better than that of animals.
Chimps are also vastly superior in plucking the arms off of people.
One of my favorite movie lines of all time. It has come in handy here on FR a few times.
