Deal Reached on Tax Rebates for Stimulus

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic and Republican congressional leaders reached a tentative deal Thursday on tax rebates of $300 to $1,200 per family and business tax cuts to jolt the slumping economy. Congressional officials close to the negotiations said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio reached agreement in principle in a telephone call Thursday morning.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the two wanted key members of their parties to sign off on the accord before any announcement.

The accord came as the White House said Thursday an agreement was imminent.

Pelosi, D-Calif., agreed to drop increases in food stamp and unemployment benefits during a Wednesday meeting in exchange for gaining rebates of at least $300 for almost everyone earning a paycheck, including low-income earners who make too little to pay income taxes.

Families with children would receive an additional $300 per child, subject to an overall cap of perhaps $1,200, according to a senior House aide who outlined the deal on condition of anonymity in advance of formal adoption of the whole package. Rebates would go to people earning below a certain income cap, likely individuals earning $75,000 or less and couples with incomes of $150,000 or less.

Don't worry. The Stimulus Package will be "off-budget" so it won't add to the national debt.

Voting for McCain destroys what remains of our sovreignty!

I'd rather be waterboarded than vote for John McCain.

And, as you’re well aware, giving $300 to someone who didn’t pay taxes won’t stimulate anything, except lotto ticket sales and sales at the liquor store.

you forgot illegal drug sales.

Im sure the illegals using fake social security numbers who claim 12 kids (so as to not pay a dime in federal taxes) wont be included in this payout! - sarcasm off.

Oh, the left will tell you that the lower income earners pay a much larger percentage in “payroll taxes” (FICA).

But, they pull some sleight of hand when you attempt to get them to address the problems with the programs that these taxes are funding.

Payroll taxes are the problem? Well, let’s look at Social Security and Medicare then. (silence)

“I’ve been screaming at FReepers who said they’d sit out the presidential election, if need be.

Now I’m not sure.”

A stomach turning feeling isn’t it? The Republicans have completely lost their ideological and intellectual reason for being. I don’t have a problem with making a tactical concession once in a while to win an election. But if you never advance the flag, what is the point?

Exactly.

They might as well throw money out of a helicopter for the good that this “stimulus” will do.

Assure businesses that their taxes aren’t going to skyrocket in 2 years and that they won’t be regulated to death,

and you’ll see real “stimulus”.

before it was 800 for only certain income levels. Now it’s 300 for everyone that earns a paycheck.

No it's not. It's a "targeted" giveaway. I earn a paycheck, but I'm excluded. My oldest son works for minimum wage. He paid $110 FIT on his gross income of $10K. He's eligible for EITC and this giveway. I earned $147K and paid $33K in FIT. I get nothing.

It could be $6,000 but thanks to Nancy, it appears most of us won’t see a dime because it only goes to non-taxpayers.

When talking to a self proclaimed “progressive” or “liberal”, stop them and ask them if they believe in redistribution of wealth through the government.

Of course they do.

Then, say, “OK, you’re a Socialist, not a ‘progressive/liberal’... continue”.

I don’t think everyone is interpreting it correctly. They need to make it clear.

People that make over $75K might do something stupid, like save the $300.

I might to something stupid like canceling my purchase of a $925 S&W 460 revolver as a protest.

Sources on Capitol Hill and at the Treasury Department said congressional and White House negotiators agreed upon checks of $600 per individual and $1,200 per couple.

A Democratic aide and Republican aide said there will be an additional amount per child, which could be in the neighborhood of $300

So,a couple gets $1200,PLUS $300 per child?Married with 5 kids = $2700?Single with 5 kids = $2100?

GAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!

I will repeat your question because I’m SO DAMN MAD-

How the hell do you get a rebate from something you’ve never paid for!!!!!????

My disgust for this Congress and President increases yet again.

No, I beieve it works out this way:

$300 per taxpayer, plus $300 per child, to a MAXIMUM of $1200 per household. So a two-parent family, with 2 kids will get the max of $1200.

BTW...has anyone heard of exactly WHEN these “rebates” are supposed to be paid?
