Deal Reached on Tax Rebates for Stimulus

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic and Republican congressional leaders reached a tentative deal Thursday on tax rebates of $300 to $1,200 per family and business tax cuts to jolt the slumping economy. Congressional officials close to the negotiations said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio reached agreement in principle in a telephone call Thursday morning.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the two wanted key members of their parties to sign off on the accord before any announcement.

The accord came as the White House said Thursday an agreement was imminent.

Pelosi, D-Calif., agreed to drop increases in food stamp and unemployment benefits during a Wednesday meeting in exchange for gaining rebates of at least $300 for almost everyone earning a paycheck, including low-income earners who make too little to pay income taxes.

Families with children would receive an additional $300 per child, subject to an overall cap of perhaps $1,200, according to a senior House aide who outlined the deal on condition of anonymity in advance of formal adoption of the whole package. Rebates would go to people earning below a certain income cap, likely individuals earning $75,000 or less and couples with incomes of $150,000 or less.

I’ve been screaming at FReepers who said they’d sit out the presidential election, if need be.

Now I’m not sure. Doesn’t matter who wins or what party rules Congress. I can’t believe this, but thinking back now, I think we got screwed during the last rebate too.

Nothing like sitting back and enjoying the fruits of our labor. Hell, I was going to send some of this to Fred, but now, nothing matters.

I hope at least a little bit of this money goes to the people who actually PAY the taxes!

So...let me get this straight. If I’m single and make over $75,000 a year, I DO NOT get a rebate, but people who pay absolutely NO taxes get $300?

Ha, Ha, SUCKER!!!...er, wait, D'Oh!!

An appropriate rebate to the taxes you pay in, not limited by how much you make. If someone makes a million, and pays a larger % of tax than I do, they deserve to receive back more in a tax rebate.

not usre but it looks like everyone, including you and I, still get the 300, but the rebate part is additional...

before it was 800 for only certain income levels. Now it’s 300 for everyone that earns a paycheck.

Disheartening, isn’t it? I read this after I read about the House Republicans meeting at the Greenbrier deciding exactly how they’re going to capitulate to the Dems on earmarks. No talk of conservatism, no mention of fighting back. I don’t see the need to waste gas going to the polls, if my only choices are Dems with a “D” behind their names or Dems with an “R” behind their names.

“Un-fracking-believable. Our reward for being successful.”

Don’t forget to say thank you. :-P

It’s insane what’s considered “wealthy” today. An income of $150,000 for two people is about the beginning of “upper middle class”. That $150,000 is just about the equivalent of $75,000 in 1980, and doesn’t go all that far.

It is indefensible that every taxpayer doesn’t receive this rebate, and also that those who don’t work or pay may receive it. The percentage of those couples with over $150K income is quite small regardless, so it wouldn’t affect revenue all that much. In fact, if you didn’t pay those who don’t pay in, I bet it would come out even or better. ;-)

I could adopt you for the day, since we only have one child. That way I could get the max “pay out”, and I could split it with you!!!!! Sounds good to me!

And, as you’re well aware, giving $300 to someone who didn’t pay taxes won’t stimulate anything, except lotto ticket sales and sales at the liquor store.

When you understand that's what they want, limiting the rebate to people making less than $75K makes perfect sense. People that make over $75K might do something stupid, like save the $300. Not much of a stimulus then, is it?

Poor people spend it on cigarettes and booze. That's ok. It's spent. That's what matters.
