Deal Reached on Tax Rebates for Stimulus

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic and Republican congressional leaders reached a tentative deal Thursday on tax rebates of $300 to $1,200 per family and business tax cuts to jolt the slumping economy. Congressional officials close to the negotiations said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio reached agreement in principle in a telephone call Thursday morning.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the two wanted key members of their parties to sign off on the accord before any announcement.

The accord came as the White House said Thursday an agreement was imminent.

Pelosi, D-Calif., agreed to drop increases in food stamp and unemployment benefits during a Wednesday meeting in exchange for gaining rebates of at least $300 for almost everyone earning a paycheck, including low-income earners who make too little to pay income taxes.

Families with children would receive an additional $300 per child, subject to an overall cap of perhaps $1,200, according to a senior House aide who outlined the deal on condition of anonymity in advance of formal adoption of the whole package. Rebates would go to people earning below a certain income cap, likely individuals earning $75,000 or less and couples with incomes of $150,000 or less.

After all, [democrats] claim tax cuts do nothing for the economy

Reducing what someone pays in only helps the taxpayer, while cash payouts "help" those in the donkey constituency who pay virtually nothing and are a tax BURDEN. But $300 goes a long way to "get they toes and hair done!"

rebate (n.) A deduction from an amount to be paid or a return of part of an amount given in payment.

So if you ain't paid anything...how is that a rebate?

leave it to our government to change the meaning of words...again.

“If I’m single and make over $75,000 a year, I DO NOT get a rebate, but people who pay absolutely NO taxes get $300?”

And, as you’re well aware, giving $300 to someone who didn’t pay taxes won’t stimulate anything, except lotto ticket sales and sales at the liquor store.

I know that’s very un-PC, but facts are facts, and many, if not most, poor people are poor due to poor choices, not bad circumstances.

“Rebates would go to people earning below a certain income cap, likely individuals earning $75,000 or less and couples with incomes of $150,000 or less.”

So because we’re pulling in more than $150,000, we’ve been given the "privilege" of subsidizing rebates to those who make less?

And what did The Beast once say about taking from some to provide for the masses? This is the same thing, only I’m being granted this "privilege" by a Republican president.

Un-fracking-believable. Our reward for being successful.

So basically, those of us who actually pay taxes won't get a rebate but those who don't pay taxes get the rebate.. nice... I expect everyone who gets a rebate to say thank you.

From the sounds of it, the Republicans will be walking funny and the Dems will have big smiles on their faces for the rest of the day.

follow up to my last post. I see it depends on the number of children. So, a woman with four children not paying income taxes gets a cool check for $1200.

“except lotto ticket sales and sales at the liquor store.”

In NYS Eliot Spitzer has decided to balance today’s budget based on future lottery revenues.
Eliot will like this.

more crap.

tax rebates should go to everyone and only those who pay taxes - and not punish the successful.

What’s with the magic numbers 75K 150K. Give me a break.

If you work hard and make a million a year you should still get a rebate.
