Duncan Hunter Endorses Mike Huckabee
National Review Online ^ | 1-23-08 | Byron York

Posted on 01/23/2008 12:29:02 PM PST by TitansAFC

This was a surprise. From the Hunter statement:

"I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail," said Hunter. "Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China's emergence as a military superpower that is taking large portions of America‚s industrial base."

"Along with these issues of national security, border enforcement and protecting the U.S. industrial base, I see another quality of Mike Huckabee's candidacy that compels my endorsement. Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity. I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed. The other Republican candidates have many strengths and I wish them all well. My personal choice is Mike Huckabee," Hunter concluded.

OMG!!...The last couple of days are too much. My primary (Michigan) is over, so no more politics for a while. Tell me when it's time to vote for the least dangerous Pubbie. When the next amnesty-style betrayal rolls around, I'll raise Hell with the "loud people." Seems like that's what national politics amounts to now...

Not sure. Something is though because he didn’t have to do this.

Since no one outside of FR seems to know who Duncan Hunter is, I don’t think it matters who he endorses.

Appreciate your post. I think just about everybody in the know wants to move the 100 or so remaining terrorists out of Gitmo, by now.

It’s just time to get them into the relative anonymity of a place like Leavenworth (isoated — there is enough Muslim recruitment in prisons). Ask the White House.

I don’t recall hearing the other candidates pulling for reinforcing our tactical defensive infrastructure like Huckabee has.

I also don’t see anyone else who wants America to achieve energy independence within ten years. I bet Hunter likes that. I do too.

So: Hunter’s minutely small number of supporters could throw their support to The Huckster. Yawn...............

LOL! You know that's not the point.

I may well write in Fred but one thing is very clear, I will NEVER vote for one of the NE liberal puke twins!

While I have not been for Fred, many of his camp are truly Conservative, and I mark you to be among them! I will NEVER vote for gun grabbing, baby killing RINOs, and shame upon those FReepers who would. BAH! They embarrass me.

With so many negative posts here about Huckabee and the border, I think it’s appropriate to post from the Huckabee website on the issue, so when people are done reading hysterics from nameless faceless posters they can see for themselves what the actual position of Huckabee is:

The Secure America Plan
A 9-Point Strategy for Immigration Enforcement and Border Security
Overview: Implement a broad-based strategy that commits the resources of the federal government to the enforcement of our immigration laws and results in the attrition of the illegal immigrant population.

1. Build the Fence

Ensure that an interlocking surveillance camera system is installed along the border by July 1, 2010.
Ensure that the border fence construction is completed by July 1, 2010.
2. Increase Border Patrol

Increase the number of border patrol agents.
Fully support all law enforcement personnel tasked with enforcing immigration law.
3. Prevent Amnesty

Policies that promote or tolerate amnesty will be rejected.
Propose to provide all illegal immigrants a 120-day window to register with the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services and leave the country. Those who register and return to their home country will face no penalty if they later apply to immigrate or visit; those who do not return home will be, when caught, barred from future reentry for a period of 10 years.
This is not a “touchback” provision. Those who leave this country and apply to return from their home country would go to the back of the line.
4. Enforce the Law on Employers

Employment is the chief draw for most illegal immigrants and denying them jobs is the centerpiece of an attrition strategy.
Impose steep fines and penalties on employers that violate the law.
Institute a universal, mandatory citizenship verification system as part of the normal hiring process.
Prevent the IRS and the Social Security Administration from accepting fraudulent Social Security numbers or numbers that don’t match the employees’ names.*

5. Establish an Economic Border

Move toward passage of the FairTax.
The FairTax provides an extra layer of security by creating an economic disincentive to immigrate to the U.S. illegally.

6. Empower Local Authorities

Promote better cooperation on enforcement by supporting legislative measures such as the CLEAR Act, which aims to systematize the relationship between local law and federal immigration officials.
Encourage immigration-law training for police. Local authorities must be provided the tools, training, and funding they need so local police can turn illegal immigrants over to the federal authorities.
7. Ensure Document Security

End exemptions for Mexicans and Canadians to the US-VISIT program, which tracks the arrival and departure of foreign visitors. Since these countries account for the vast majority of foreigners coming here (85 percent), such a policy clearly violates Congress’ intent in mandating this check-in/check-out system.
Reject Mexico’s “matricula consular” card, which functions as an illegal-immigrant identification card.
8. Discourage Dual Citizenship

Inform foreign governments when their former citizens become naturalized U.S. citizens.
Impose civil and/or criminal penalties on American citizens who illegitimately use their dual status (e.g., using a foreign passport, voting in elections in both a foreign country and the U.S.).
9. Modernize the Process of Legal Immigration

Eliminate the visa lottery system and the admission category for adult brothers and sisters of U.S. citizens.
Increase visas for highly-skilled and highly-educated applicants.
Expedite processing for those who serve honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Improve our immigration process so that those patiently and responsibly seeking to come here legally will not have to wait decades to share in the American dream. Governor Huckabee has always been grateful to live in a country that people are trying to break into, rather than break out of.

*This policy will be drafted to comply with the final federal court decisions on this issue.

"Romney is a flip-flopper and a closet liberal..."

Romney was a closet conservative while campaigning here in Massachusetts.

His record is far from full fledged conservatism.

The reason there is so much shock here about it is because people were duped into thinking Hunter was a conservative.

He has tons of liberal votes in his record, siding with Ted Kennedy and Bill Clinton issues.

Over 28 years unless you’re a perfect conservative (and there is NONE) you will have perceived “liberal” positions, especially if you’re not a free trader.

NPR, USATODAY, TIME... the core of the liberal media, have all started promoting Romney...

Which articles do you consider to be "promoting" Romney?

The NPR show which insisted Romney would drop out if he lost Iowa??

Or the AP article (Ron Fournier, wasn't it?) where they predicted Romney would be "finished" if he lost New Hampshire?

Or the USAToday article which claimed that Romney would drop out after he lost Michigan, or that Nevada is meaningless, and thus would have "no impact" on the race?

I don't know which liberal media you are listening to, but it must be in another universe.

Because the mainstream liberal media can't diss and ignore Romney fast enough.

Which suits me fine, actually. I hope the mainstream leaves their distorted hands off the entire Republican primary, not just Romney.

Well, I supported Hunter. But I do not support this endorsement. I personally feel that McCain would be the worst on immigration, followed by Huckabee. His record says as much, as did his own mouth to begin with in the debates when defending his Arkansas record of offering in-state tuition to illegal alien children.

Thomspon was my second choice by far. I now will support Romney as I believe he is the nearest thing to conservative on most issues of those left standing.

My EXACT thoughts.

You’re not kidding on that one. If Fred endorses McCain, I may have to do that ritualistic Japanese suicide thing.
