Duncan Hunter Endorses Mike Huckabee
National Review Online ^ | 1-23-08 | Byron York

This was a surprise. From the Hunter statement:

"I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail," said Hunter. "Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China's emergence as a military superpower that is taking large portions of America‚s industrial base."

"Along with these issues of national security, border enforcement and protecting the U.S. industrial base, I see another quality of Mike Huckabee's candidacy that compels my endorsement. Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity. I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed. The other Republican candidates have many strengths and I wish them all well. My personal choice is Mike Huckabee," Hunter concluded.

Frankly I’ve never known a “socialist” who is staunchly pro-life, strongly pro-Second-Amendment, has signed a no-new-taxes pledge, and wants to abolish the IRS.

Nor have I.

I certainly trust Hunter far more than any politician I’ve seen in recent years. It doesn’t mean I’ll vote for Huck but I will try to keep an open mind and see what I can find.

Huckabee is far more conservative than the FR community has allowed. So little debate is directed at his stated positions.

Yep.

Yet another reason to support Romney.

I think you may be giving the democrat voter credit for way too much intelligence. More like, it’s all just another manifestation of the degeneration of the society. The ability to think rationally, based on facts, is sorely out of fashion.

No need for a conspiracy to cause havoc in the GOP. Republicans are notoriously rabid, independent thinkers. We hate Government bureaucrats running our lives, Presidents who make us the laughingstock of the world, taxes, handouts and excuses.

We are quite capable of intercenine conflict - plus we love repairing & rebuilding.

He could have endorsed nobody and said so. That would have sent a better message then endorsing Huckster.

I do think Hunter owes his supporters some kind of explanation instead of cloak and dagger.

And he was staunchly rude about Fred Thompson the day he dropped out of the race. Not sure what was served by Huckabee being so vindictive towards Thompson. When I heard him that day I was sure I wasn’t going to vote for him. Christian my patootey!

Actually Thompson was about as strong of a free trader as anyone running. That was an issue that Hunter and Thompson had publically clashed about. He probably also thought that Thompson was weak on the right to life issue. Not to mention the fact that we all expected Thompson to drop out out after he came in third in SC. It was the night of the SC primaries that Hunter dropped and Fred was only 3 or 4 days behind him so he probably wanted to see if Fred was staying in before he even would consider endorsing him.

"If the Hucketer wins, I foresee the RAT's winning the POTUS in 2012 and controlling Congress for a generation."

You only have to see what happened in Arkansas to prove your point. I guess the GOP hasn't learned it's lesson yet.

There is a lot of hyperbole around here about all the candidates.

I may look into Huckabee a little more, just so I can verify any complaints I have about his record — up till now, I’ve been pretty quiet about him so I didn’t need to know much.

But every day there are things he says that turn me off, and scare me about his ability to run a campaign much less be the President of the United States.

Like when he said we should change the constitution to be more like the Bible. Of course he didn’t mean it, he just meant amend it to put in the HLA, but any person with a brain would know NOT to say it that way.

Or his “living, breathing document” comment about the constitution. Again, he didn’t mean it, but anybody who had tried to understand the strict constructionist movement would have know not to use that liberal phrase.

Then there’s the politics of division. Like when he brought up the Confederate flag in South Carolina. NOBODY is talking about that, it was an issue in 2000, and South Carolina resolved the issue for themselves. But he drug it out again, just to try to ding McCain on it, driving a wedge again into the electorate. The worst part — it’s a STATE matter, and he actually said so, while making it part of the national election. He is very slick.

Then there is how he often uses feelings instead of logic in his arguments. He says we can’t deport illegals if they are kids, but doesn’t give a LOGICAL reason for it, instead he says if I want to deport them I’m being unchristian. Or says we can’t be “mean”. That’s not an argument.

Then there is the cross advertisement, and worse his campaigns “we aren’t that smart”. Or his “here’s the Ad I’m not running”, when the ad itself did NOT do what he claimed it did to begin with.

Nobody’s talking about Romney for VP.

Why would the next POTUS be interested in a VP position?
