Duncan Hunter Endorses Mike Huckabee
National Review Online ^ | 1-23-08 | Byron York

Posted on 01/23/2008 12:29:02 PM PST by TitansAFC

This was a surprise. From the Hunter statement:

"I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail," said Hunter. "Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China's emergence as a military superpower that is taking large portions of America‚s industrial base."

"Along with these issues of national security, border enforcement and protecting the U.S. industrial base, I see another quality of Mike Huckabee's candidacy that compels my endorsement. Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity. I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed. The other Republican candidates have many strengths and I wish them all well. My personal choice is Mike Huckabee," Hunter concluded.

Well, I’m stunned. And after reading through about 280 comments, I see that all but 2 or 3 people are also stunned.

Maybe people will forget this in due course, but I don’t see how it can help Huckabee one bit, and it can only hurt Hunter.

Hunter never had a chance this election cycle, but I thought he might be a good prospect for the future. Now I’m not so sure. Seems to me this was a good way to undermine his reputation for no useful purpose.

“Pissant is lying low.

Can’t say as I blame him.”

Maybe he’s working. Or maybe it’s just that everyone has been talking about him without pinging him. He’ll find the thread eventually.

Pissant was pinged at least twice in the first 50 posts. I know because I did a brief search, wondering what he’d say about this.

Good analysis. I agree with all three points. Which is most important? I am having a hard time with this question because it all depends on what happens over the next 4 years and we can’t know that. Despite very strong misgivings, I find myself leaning toward Huck.

Who else was he going to endorse? I'm sure Duncan knows what a backstabber John McCain is and how he has tried to undermine most conservative legislation over the years. He would never endorse a pro-abortion candidate like Giuliani. And, he knows -- like any true conservative does -- what lying, flip-flopping liberal Willard Romney was.

I guess I will too; even though I don’t understand and do we really need another man from Hope?

Hunter never said do not trade with China he just wanted a new and enforced trade deal that actually benefits the workers of the USA instead of a trade deal that puts the USA companies at a disadvantage.

Has anybody mentioned that the NEA endorses Huckabee?? Huckabee’s daughter worked for the NEA before she started working on his campaign. The Huckster opposes school vouchers. The guy is no conservative.

Careful. When you say “Socialist” his followers mistakenly think you’re referring to social issues. lol.”

You are right. That’s the problem. Most people don’t even know what socialism is much less that it is an evil destructive ideology that will lead to the eventual total collapse of a country just as happened to the Soviet Union in the 1990’s.

Marxists like Huckabee and McCain can just promise to give away more government benefits to illegals and to the poor, and to who ever and people will just vote for him because they think they are getting something for free. What they are really doing is empowering government, losing freedom and ruining the economy.

Rush thought so, too. Wonder what he'll have to say about this tomorrow?

Look, the main thing I ever heard about Duncan Hunter was that he was the one we could really trust to be serious about illegal immigration.

This endorsement negates everything we ever thought about him.

Yes, it is a big deal. A Very Big Deal.

Hunter has criticized Romney on Bain Capital...

Which was complete idiocy. Romney left Bain years ago; he has no control whatsoever over their current activities. Hunter showed himself to be a complete loon when he did that.

I had a lot of respect for Congressman Hunter, and would’ve been proud to cast my vote for him - if he had gotten any traction at all. I actually preferred him to Fred Thompson.

However.

Now I seriously question his judgment.

Huckabee may be conservative on social issues. Great. But we also face a foreign crisis, and the guy doesn’t know squat about foreign or defense affairs. He blamed America first (for the Bhutto assassination), in the truest tradition of evangelical southern politicians who are in the former governors club. On economic affairs, which are also critical to this nation, he’s a tax and spend liberal, someone in love with over-regulation of us - for our own good, don’t you know. Sorry, that sounds too much to me like Hillary care.

Besides, Huck would get creamed by either Monica’s Boyfriend’s Wife or the empty suit.

Thankfully, Hunter’s endorsement means little, and only reflects badly on him. Here’s some advice, Duncan: Ancient Chinese Saying: “Better to keep your mouth closed and have people think you are a fool, than to open it and confirm the truth of their thoughts.”
