Grandma Arrested At McDonald's Called Officer 'Evil,' Report Says
MSNBC ^

CLEARWATER - The 75-year-old grandmother who was arrested Thursday at a McDonald's on a charge of disorderly conduct gave an officer lip, according to a police report. Jean Merola swore at the officer and said, "You are an evil man. Your wife is going to divorce you. Your kids probably hate you too. You are going to hell," according to the report.

Officer Matthew Parco was behind Merola in line and had received his drink; he asked her to move up so he could get around her but she didn't respond. Parco spent about 20 minutes asking Merola to move the car before she was arrested.

She was told to move her car forward by the McDonald’s staff which is normal operating procedure when you order something odd ball that will take significantly more time while customers are waiting behind you.

When she refused to move she was violating the property owner’s directions.

Then after she got her food she continued to argue with the officer behind her for an extended time causing everyone in line to wait excessively, but for their food to get cold while they waited for her to move.

She deserves to be arrested. She should have to make restitution to everyone stuck behind her.

Did she pay for the "unsalted' fries, and did she ever get them?

I would presume that she paid for the "unsalted fries" and was told by the people at the window to move up so that the people behind her could proceed...which she apparently was unwilling to do.

Getting unsalted fries at McDonald's can take a while as the person taking the order haas to catch the next batch of fries that come out before they are salted. Others needing orders of fries and walking by may dump the next batch and salt it before you get to it. (Just saying.)

It didn’t take 20 minutes for her to get her food.

I guess you hate your own grandmothers too. There’s a lot of hatred on this thread for people perceived to be “elderly.”

And, oh, when I spoke of “being in the way,” I wasn’t referring to driving. You all assumed that.

I was afraid you would use the word “legal.” I’m not familiar with the current state of the law in Florida, but I’m not aware of a law that entitles you to sit on your ass.

Sounds like “grandma” is a bit mentally off, but the police officer did the right thing.

Ms. Merola was on private property, specifically the drive-thru lane of a FAST food restaurant, and had placed a special order (french fries without salt). She refused the request of the manager, who was authorized to be in charge of the private property, and subsequently the request of the police officer who happened to be behind her (and was supporting the manager’s authorized request), to move her car so that other drive-thru customers could continue to be served. This is standard practice at drive-thrus, and she’d been told an employee would bring her order out to her car when it was ready — also standard practice, and certainly an inconvenience to the restaurant staff. Ms. Merola has no right to interfere with the operation of a private business on private property, by refusing to move her car upon request, thus unnecessarily delaying service to other customers.

When the property owner’s representatives told her to move, that she was blocking their businesses activity she violated the law by not complying.

You don’t have the right to block a businesses drive through from conducting its normal business when told to move.

Good for her. I’m glad for what she did, every bit of it. I hope she enjoyed her fries. I would like to meet her. The cop is a prick throwing his weight around. Btw, you don’t know all the facts.

People can get up and walk into the restaurant, but it’s asking too much, I know.

If they had walked into the restaurant, how would that fix the fact she was blocking the drive-thru?

Thinking is in short supply on this thread.

The irony of you posting this was good for a chuckle.

Thanks.

I doubt you would be a success in business, considering your attitude towards customers: it’s an “inconvenience” to take food to the customer that she has already paid for??!!

HUH? You mean we need a law specifying that people are allowed to do nothing?

She wasn’t “sitting” on her ass. She was waiting as instructed by the business for delivery of the product she had purchased.

If the cop had not bothered her the fries would have been delivered in 4 mins and everyone would be on their way. Instead everyone was delayed for at least 20 mins and the cop lost a couple hours for paperwork. What about all the calls and murders that occurred while he was doing paperwork for this stupid incident.

Sure the lady was rude but there is no law against rude. Treat people with respect and they will usually respond likewise.

Oh, that was you doing your shopping exactly at noon today when most of us have barely an hour to get our lunches and errands done at that time of day. I waited six minutes and was five minutes late to work and my appointment got up and walked out after waiting three minutes.

She got the fries quickly. She then refused to move where she was blocking the drive thru
