AP | Jan. 19, 2008 | Breaking News

Sen. John McCain won Saturday's South Carolina Republican presidential primary, AP projects.

Fox News and NBC News exit polls ranked the economy as the top concern among South Carolina primary voters, followed by illegal immigration, the war in Iraq, and terrorism.

Columnist and Weekly Standard Editor William Kristol commenting on Saturday's results on the Fox News Channel said that the Republican field is now winnowing down to just three viable candidates: McCain, Mitt Romney, and Rudy Giuliani.

Romney? He won’t win against the Clinton machine

You are blind to the reality that Romney's "machine" is the biggest of any GOP candidate.

This time last year Romney was known to only 5% of GOP voters and due to his extraordinary campaign organization we has won 3 of the first 6 primary elections.

He is an organizational genius and when old hand GOP strategists get on board with him (if he is the nominee) he will certainly be able to take on the clintons.

IMHO McQueeq has way to many drawbacks to be at the top of my list. I’m a big Fred support with Mitt 2nd as it stands now. His support of Global Warming is going to put a big hurt on business in this country. He will probably sign Kyoto(sp).

What could a Conservative hope to get out of a McCain Administration?

Judges?----McCain's Gang of 14 fiasco?

Foreign Policy? Mr Surrender to Iraq and Syria Baker Commission and Close Git-mo will be "tough"? John Kerry's 1st VP pick will have a "tough foreign policy"?

Spending restraint? Number of pieces of Legislation to Control Spending presented by John McCain.....ZERO.

Tax cuts? John McCain voted against the Bush tax cuts

In addition, the single biggest issue Hillary Clinton is vulnerable on, Immigration goes right off the table if the GOP nominates John McCain.

"But McCains poll numbers".... 10 months ago Rudy G was the only guy who could beat Hillary. That tell any of the McCainiacs why it is so completely stupid to pick your nominee based on poll numbers 10 months before a general election?

If the choice is McCain or Huckabee... McCain wins hands down.

Amen to that. Whatever good has come out of tonight, it's that McCain may well have knocked Huckabee out.

There will be a record low turnout at our Dem primary next Saturday. Many of the white Dems already voted for Huck and McCain.
Obama should win SC in a landslide.

Paul was the only GOP candidate besides Romney to seriously campaign in Nevada.

For the first time in my life, I may very well sit this one out.

McCain is clueless as to what conservatives want, or he just doesn't care. I wonder if he actually realizes that he's ticked off conservatives over the years. His thoughts seem to be devoted to obsessions about torture and amnesty.

Giuliani is not viable candidate.

As a Huck defender, I can understand why you would want that to be the case. As a conservative Fred supporter, we want Rudy to win the stupid people votes here in the NE liberal states...better chance for a brokered convention and a real conservative emerging.

McCain is NOT a conservative. How is McCain different from Hillary or Obama? He sides with the democrats on too many key issues. Despite his military background and his stated stance on Iraq, I see him as the most likely candidate to cave in to the democrats' demands to bring home the troops. I do not trust the man.

How the republican party reached a point where this liberal republican is a serious threat to be the nominee is an embarrassment.

“Romney is a dirtbag! He would win at the most 5-6 states in the G.E., ensuring all those things you’re against (liberal judges, high taxes, social reform) come true under either Hillary or Obama...”

You keep saying it, but you know it’s absolute bunk. My guess is we won’t see another Reagan-Mondale. Romney can stand toe-to-toe with Clinton. And that becomes even more the truth if the economy starts going sour.

Now that the evangelical vote isn’t critical Fred will get out and hopefully throw his support behind McCain.

... I don't want a Democrat anywhere NEAR the Oval Office, and I won't allow one to be elected by not voting, just because my guy didn't make it as the nominee.

So your alternative is to accept a RINO and let them do just as much, if not more damage than dem in the WH?

What the dumbass Republican "anybody's better than a dem" moderates do not get is if you nominate a moderate/rino you WILL definately get a dem in the WH.

I sure as shinola don't see a conservative getting nominated the way this primary season is going, thus you better start thinking about what dem you'd rather see in the WH.

As far as I'm concerned the Republican party is in full fledged "stupidity" gear right now!

If Romney gets the nomination he’ll clean Hillary’s clock. I don’t know why so many think otherwise, looking at his record he knows how to campaign and win. I’d rather see someone more conservative but if it comes down to him or McCain then there isn’t much choice for me who it’ll be.

Anybody who voted for McCain because he DOESN’T want illegals taking over has a screw loose. The same with voting for someone because of his service. Jimmy Carter was a Navy Officer. Military service is not a guarantee of anything, including competent governance.

Im sorry he’s more viable than McLame.

Willard is, according to the RCP average of all recent polls, 22 points behind Obama. He is even behind Hillary by 12%. He has Mormon problem that isn't going away. And, he is an habitual liar and flip-flopper like Bill Clinton.

Romney is embarrassment of candidate.

If McCain were the nominee in November, nothing would please me more on the 5th if John McCain were to get about 25% of the votes Bush did in 2004.
