Romney proposes $250 bln economic stimulus package Fri Jan 18, 2008 7:33pm EST
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Weighing in on a debate about stimulating the slowing U.S. economy, Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney called on Friday for a package of tax breaks expected to cost $250 billion, according to a report by the CNBC business TV channel.
The former Massachusetts governor's package, CNBC said, centered on several permanent tax cuts, rather than temporary rebates and spending programs favored by others engaged in the stimulus discussion in Washington and on the campaign trail.
Romney plans to propose permanently reducing the rate for the lowest income tax bracket to 7.5 percent from 10 percent, retroactive to 2007, eliminating Social Security payroll taxes for workers over 65 and eliminating capital gains and dividend taxes on households earning under $200,000 a year, CNBC said on its Web site.
He would also permanently reduce the corporate tax rate to 20 percent from 35 percent over two years and allow businesses to depreciate the value of new equipment purchases faster.
CNBC said an aide to Romney pegged the total cost of his package at about $250 billion.
President George W. Bush earlier on Friday called on Congress to enact a package of temporary tax cuts and other measures estimated to cost up to $150 billion.

And, contrary to some of the posts on this thread, this is essentially the same tax plan Romney detailed in his position papers about a year ago.
At least you're honest about your objections to Romney, and I can respect that. You also recognize the basic Reaganomics contained in Romney's tax proposals, and I commend you for that.
What the HELL is going on with Freepers? Has the passion for or against your preferred candidate muddled your thought process altogether? Now when a politicain proposes a tax cut (even thought the MSM headling wants to call it a stimulus spending package) many of you shout "how dare he spend our money?" There tax cuts folks...maybe you would like them not to be selective or maybe you want them to be for your pet tax issue or maybe you don't care becasue they are not coming from your favorite candidate, but really too scream the guy is spending your money or that he's a bif gocvernment liberal based on the MSM rendition of his package is a little hard to take.
We have some real idiots on FR if they think the supply side tax cuts that Romney is proposing are bad. If any of you are against these tax cuts, then you are not a fiscal conservative.
I see the problem. Tax cuts for low-income people. Can’t have that.
“I would have great problems voting for a Mormon.”
That is the main reason people are making dumb remarks about his tax cuts here on FR. They are religious bigots just like you are and they let that get in the way of why we should be voting for a person. I could give a rat’s ass what religion someone is. I am only interested in conservative policy, and Romney’s tax cuts are as conservative as it gets.
When I heard a blurb about this, it made it sound like he was just out-bidding Bush.
But when I read the plan, it costs more because he is making tax cuts permanent as part of it, which other people aren’t but we all agree should be done. It just shouldn’t be counted as part of the of the “economic stimulus”, because it’s just the right thing to do.
Round up and expel the illegals and there is no longer any unemployment and employers will need to raise wages and benefits to keep their employees happy.
The cognitive dissonance will be out of control this election season as the Democrats and fake Republicans emote about how we need the illegals to fill jobs while also emoting about rampant unemployment of the citizenry.
Fred Thompson was proposing a cut in the corporate tax rate. It was good then, it’s probably still a good idea even though Romney is proposing it.
“Depreciation Expense is all fine an dandy until it comes time for recapture. Do you want to pay 39% on the gain of selling a $100,000 machineoriginal cost 3 years later for $33,000 which, coincidentally, is what you still owe the bank?”
Yes, I will take that every time. Anyone with half an understanding of the time value of money will as well. An expense deduction is always, and I mean always, better than depreciation. There is recapture on equipment depreciation too if you did not know. By the way, I am a tax attorney, so if you want to talk taxes, I will be happy to talk.
You are not allowed to use dynamic accounting when doing tax cuts. You have to say they “cost” money, even though they probably won’t cost nearly as much as it says.
The question is, will a cut in the corporate tax rate stimulate the economy? If so, then it won’t cost what they say.
Bravo to Romney for proposing the right kind of stimulus - permanent structural tax relief that will get businesses back on track and get savings and investment flowing and give money to middle class taxpayers. This is the most Reaganesque tax proposal we have seen in a loong time.
This stimulus is only 2% of GDP, so will easily pay for itself if the economy staves off a recession, which it will do.
It’s a pity we cant get him into the White House now, with a GOP Congress, to pass it.
Pathetic. At least read the article before you make an ignorant comment.
Exactly!
“You are not allowed to use dynamic accounting when doing tax cuts.”
That is correct, but what is more fundamental is that a tax cut is not a government expense no matter what type of accounting is used. It is merely not collecting as much revenue or reducing the rate at which revenue is collected. An expense occurs when you buy something or pay for a service (or give people money who did not pay it in as taxes—welfare). It is sad that the government gets away with calling tax cuts an expense.
There are far too many sensible people on this thread. You’re going to cause a rupture in the fabric of the universe.
But that’s only because a year ago he knew he’d need a stimulus package to propose right before the South Carolina primary, so he wrote it down last year so he would have one ready.
Just like he bribed people 10 years ago because he knew he’d need their endorsement for President this year.
Romney can do anything. :-)
Oh please EV is so drunk on rage towards Mitt EV has become backwards and can’t even see it is a page from Reaganomic!
“Give away your own money, Mitt.”
Are you complaining about a tax break?
