Here's the deal, folks: The New York Times has some damaging goods on John McCain, reportedly involving a female lobbyist. McCain threatened legal action if the Times printed the story. The Times backed off... for now. But you can be sure the Times will unload on McCain if he nails down the GOP nomination...

If the times wants a total "China Syndrome" melt down of gossip and innuendo, they are playing with fire in their support of liberals.

It will get very ugly - fast.

I personally dislike McCain and professional despise many of his positions, but I call BS. The Times has repeatedly run with poorly checked, damaging stories about the nation, the President, Members of Congress, and presidential candidates.

If they had it they’d run it. This is mudslinging and ridiculous.

From Drudge:

MEDIA FIREWORKS: MCCAIN PLEADS WITH NY TIMES TO SPIKE STORY
Thu Dec 20 2007 10:56:57 ET

Just weeks away from a possible surprise victory in the primaries, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz has been waging a ferocious behind the scenes battle with the NEW YORK TIMES, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, and has hired DC power lawyer Bob Bennett to mount a bold defense against charges of giving special treatment to a lobbyist!

McCain has personally pleaded with NY TIMES editor Bill Keller not to publish the high-impact report involving key telecom legislation before the Senate Commerce Committee, newsroom insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

The paper’s Jim Rutenberg has been leading the investigation and is described as beyond frustrated with McCain’s aggressive and angry efforts to stop any and all publication.

MORE

The drama involves a woman lobbyist who may have helped to write key telecom legislation.

The woman in question has retained counsel and strongly denies receiving any special treatment from McCain.

Rutenberg, along with reporter David Kirkpatrick, has been developing the story for the last 6 weeks.

Rutenberg had hoped to break the story before the Christmas holiday, sources reveal, but editor Keller expressed serious reservations about journalism ethics and issuing a damaging story so close to an election.

McCain campaign officials Rick Davis, Charlie Black and Mark Salter are also said to have met with the NEW YORK TIMES in an effort to halt publication.

Developing...

“The Times backed off... for now. But you can be sure the Times will unload on McCain if he nails down the GOP nomination...”

Oh, sure they’ll wait until then! Yuk.

The worst cursing I ever got was in 2004 when I relayed a personal story about McCain on FR. McCain was NOT nice to his x wife, crippled from a car wreck and had to be taken in by others to care for because McCain wouldn’t. She stuck by him the entire time he was in Nam. People forget how he denigrated Bush then.

“It looks as though Google has stopped issuing a warning about the American Spectator’s site. For a while, a search for the site would return a warning about malware.”

The leftwing-leaning Google ‘warning’ about a conservative website?

My right-wing conspiracy-theory paranoia needle is flickering wildly.

Maybe the Times is holding the story back wondering if leaking it will attract dem voters to cross-over and vote for McCain over SilkyOsamaHitlery. After all aren’t the dem’s attracted to sleazy adulterous unfaithful politicians?

If this is NOT true- and these guys are all going with it- it’s awful for everyone involved in spreading it- and shame on them.

HOWEVER- if it IS true :) - all bets are off and the race will start almost from scratch.

Maybe so. I’m just tired of it all.

When was the last time we tried to promote our candidate based on what he did right, instead of who is opponent slept with?

Besides, does it pass the smell test? Captain Queeg wasn’t exactly a sex pot last time I saw him. :p
