The question was posed to me last night, if the only two conservatives in the race were to drop out, leaving the hapless RINOs Giuliani, Romney, Huckabee and McCain to ward off the Evil Witch of the East then, Jim, what do we do?
Well, I think four issues that most of us conservatives will agree on that are at the top or near the top of our priority lists are National Defense, Border Security, Guns and Life should be considered. We can argue all day long on whether or not these guys are constitutionally minded, small government fiscal conservatives, and I don't believe any of them are, but we'll leave that for another day. Let's concentrate on National Defense, Border Security, Guns and Life.
Well, I can see right off that that rules out Rudy, the draft dodging, gun grabbing, sanctuary city abortionist. At least the other three claim to be pro-life, although Romney has been a pro-choice abortionist for all of his elected history until he decided to run for president. I think Romney's pro choice, big government nanny state (RomneyCare) record gives him two big black eyes and should knock him out of any further consideration. That leaves Huckabee and McCain.
Now, all four of these guys are terrible on border security even though they're all claiming now to be border hawks. McCain led the charge for amnesty and the rest fell in line like dutiful RINO troopers. Can't really make a distinction among these guys on the border issue. All fail, though I think most conservatives would rank McCain at or near the bottom.
Guns. Rudy's definitely out. McCain's out. Romney's not much better. Guess Huckabee the big duck hunter outshoots the others in this category.
Rudy fails in all categories, McCain and Romney fail on guns, and all fail on borders. So I guess Huckabee has more to offer over the others at this point as he is at least pro-life and pro-gun.
Now comes national defense. Sorry, but I can't see the draft dodging, gun grabbing, gay loving, cross-dressing, illegal alien pandering abortion activist Rudy Giuliani as a very appealing or effective guy to head up our military, even if he did make some rousing anti-terrorist speeches on 9/11. The "gays should be allowed to serve openly in the military" Romney (no military or national security experience that I know of) doesn't give me goosebumps either.
So, again, we're down to Huckabee and McCain. Now you all know that I like Huckabee as he is a likable fellow, and I hate McCain, but wait. If the whole shebang is going to be decided on which of the still standing Republican wannabes should defend America from the terrorists and the surrendering Democrats, I think I'll have to go with McCain over Huckabee. At least McCain served in the military and has a whole lot more military and national security experience while serving on various committees in the senate than does Huckabee. Huckabee has none. And I doubt Huckabee can defeat Hillary. But then, McCain probably won't either, so guess that leaves plan B. Squat down, tuck your head down between your knees and kiss your ass goodbye.
Here's praying that the only two all around consistently reliable conservatives hang in there and one of them gets the nod.
Go Hunter!! Go, FRed, GO!!
How would the Democrats lose the next elections in ‘10, ‘12, and beyond if, as a Democratic majority with a Democratic POTUS from January ‘09 on, they truly succeed in creating “The Fairness Doctrine” which would seriously ban and “gag” everything conservative, including all conservative talk radio and all conservative websites including FR? The left, as a serious political majority, will also greatly increase their political clout for a long time by creating legislation which will allow amnesty for illegal immigrants “to the max” and also allow illegal immigrants to vote in all future U.S. elections. There will be endless waves of new illegal immigrants who will end up coming to the U.S. in order to take full advantage of all of the new amnesty programs which will be created just for them. Conservatives will truly have no way of matching the numbers of new voters that these illegal immigrants will truly create for the “political left”, and both conservatism and the Republican Party will eventually die off because of all of this while long-term socialism keeps on getting stronger throughout the U.S.! Conservatives truly need to win in ‘08 and beyond in order to truly prevent all of these problems from actually occurring during the future of the U.S.!
True. Conservatives, *not* Republicans. There is a difference, and that difference is the subject of this thread. I will happily vote Conservative this election, but that does not include Giuliani, Romney, McCaine, or Huckabee, or Thompson for that matter.
ALL of the above have uttered the words "Path to Citizenship", so your worries about immigration do not apply at all. A vote for any of them will get you the same as a Democrat.
Giuliani, Romney, McCain, and Huckabee will all give you socialized health care.
I would not trust any but Thompson regarding the Fairness Doctrine- while not "for" it, it may well be on the bargaining table.
Six of one, half dozen of the other.
Here is the question:
Free Republic’s (1/9) poll on Republican candidates’ liberal positions that would be deal killers

Jim,
What do we do if the other choice is Hillary?

I thought Giuliani and The Huckster talked about free market solutions?
Purely crap. The problem is the people who cannot afford insurance. Any free market solution must take that into account, probably by way of the gov picking up the tab on those who have no money.
The moment that insurance is required, and the gov is picking up those the carriers do not want (which they already do), insurance becomes a protected market, immune to supply and demand, and destined to go UP.
The only thing that scares me about that is some people will literally stay home. I’ll only vote Duncan or Fred, but I will go and vote for the rest of the slate. I’m sure you intend the same, but some good Republican congressman could be in peril if people literally stay home.
FR seems to be at risk of becoming a bastion of the irrational.
I am by no means convinced about Romney and have already given to Fred several times but should Fred fail.....and it looks like that sadly despite his better performance tonight....
Rudi is tenacious...I like that...but he is a huge social liberal...anathema to me.
McCain is way too open borders...and doesn’t run from it.
Huckster is pretty open borders too but does run away from it....though on social issues he’s pretty spot on yet he seem to salivate at the notion of universal coverage.
Romney has the benefit of more ambiguity on his side about amnesty though I do worry about his real abortion stance....he is an apostate Mormon or not?....he is if he ever supported abortion, their language is quite clear about that.
The foreign policy experience doesn’t bother me too much....neither Bush II nor Reagan had a lot either and they did pretty good.
Romney seems like the safest bet to me.....not great but not as bad as the others.
It is a piss poor moment that this is all we have. Very bad.
Paul....what a strange duck.
Etc., etc. etc.
But, quite frankly, when it comes to the GOP and it's Establishment-dominated management I AM TIRED OF WAITING FOR OUR TURN.
Look at it this way. Let us say, one was 18, of voting age, when the last true Ronald Reagan Republican won the nomination and led the GOP. Why, it was RONALD REAGAN himself.
Sorry, Bush-1, Bob Dull and Bush-2 are and were NOT Ronald Reagan Republicans of the conservative wing.
If one were 18 in 1984, one would now be 42-years-old. Considering perhaps a 75 year life expectancy, one would have spent close to one's half of one's life as a voting age adult WAITING FOR THE REPUBLICANS TO NOMINATE A STRONG, RONALD REAGAN CONSERVATIVE.
This is not big tent ism. This is domination of the party by the moderate/centrist and even Ripon Republican wing, and conservatives just shunted to the side, kept out of debates, but told to shut up and go with the program.
Sorry. No more.
I think only MittCare requires someone to buy insurance.
I suggest to break out of this, language needs to be our friend.
We should avoid the term "Third Party" when we talk about a conservative option.
"Third Party" denotes and gives the feeling of "loser", "minor party", "fringe", "throw away vote".
However, let us use (if it comes to it) the term "Conservative Alternative", or "Independent Conservative", or "Conservative vs. the Two Democrats in the General Election". This kind of thinking.
I think if a strong conservative American leader, particularly well-known with requisite leadership credentials either in business, government or academia/media, articulate, telegenic, well-financed and rock solid on IMMIGRATION were to emerge if the Repubs go with a RINO in the General Election, why all things will be up in the air and it will be a very interesting 2008!
Thre David Souters?
I thought military voters didn’t support him in 2000 because of his sellout of POWMIAs.
True, on the surface. But how does the govt. as an entity provide a way for all to be insured if not by the requirement?
The nanny state Republican solution can only differ from the Democrats in one way:
The Dems would have a single payer system solely handled by the government.
The pubs would have a multi-payer cabal which would undoubtedly end up monopolizing the industry. That cabal would eventually become a single entity, either by collusion or takeover, hence single payer all the same.
Damn good post Mr. Robinson... you made me proud tonight.
Here’s your solution, Jim:
Keep tearing down Mike Huckabee and his true bona fides and then get John McCain. But realistically, even if all FReepers were somehow together on a candidate, a conservative news forum is not much of a player in presidential politics anyway, so not to worry. You know it’s TV and other mass media that still reigns, as a conduit to Americans’ predisposed souls.
So, apparently John McCain is poised to be a juggernaught, unless Huckabee would be able to come up with some surprising victory in Michigan leading to others. And that is very unlikely, due in large part to Americans’ prejudice against Bible believing Christians, since the mere presence of these threatens their sense of personal security.
I doubt even HRC will get in McCain’s way, which is the silver lining. Sure hope he nominates originalist justices, if my perceptions are correct.
cc: some FReepers interested in Gov. Huckabee and a very few others. Keep tellin’ the truth, folks!
Through the tax code is the obvious answer. It would not be a guarantee though.
I agree with the end result if you're going for a guarantee.
OK! :D
I could not agree more! It might be a great send off for the Conservative Party or the Reagan Party etc... I would be sure give it a hard look, as after this primary I am unlikely to be a Republican anyway.
My changes of staying with the GOP choice at the top of the ticket (although I would still support Conservative GOPs and philsophies for House, Senate, local races and ballot initiatives), are at this point, are 28%, judging on whether Hunter or Thompson were the nominees, and not the RINO phonies. So it is looking more and more as it will be “Independent Conservative” for me in 2008. We will have to see. I am still plugging for Hunter.
Me too, though only Hunter for me, now that Tanc dropped out. All the rest have said the words "Path to Citizenship", which omits them from my "Ok to vote for" list.
