Romney admits that he was wrong to deny that his campaign had ever accused McCain of supporting amnesty. Good for him. It’s less important than the fact that McCain supported amnesty, and less important still that the actual policy dispute the squabbling over that word hides. But it’s still a strange mistake for Romney to have made.
He got caught in a stupid, shabby lie, and like the NYT or Bill Clinton, the lie is way up front, the apology is buried.
