Welcome to the 27 DEC 07 edition of

The FReeper Canteen!

Today, we shall learn about The First Muster of the National Guard!

On 13 DEC 1636, the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony ordered the organization of the Colony’s militia companies into three regiments: The North, South and East Regiments. The colonists had adopted the English militia system which obligated all males, between the ages of 16 and 60, to possess arms and participate in the defense of the community. The early colonial militia drilled once a week and provided guard details each evening to sound the alarm in case of attack. The growing threat of the Pequot Indians to the Massachusetts Bay Colony required that the militia be in a high state of readiness. The organization of the North, South and East Regiments increased the efficiency and responsiveness of the militia. Although the exact date is not known, the first muster of the East Regiment took place in Salem, MA.

One of the first commanders of the Militia was likely Capt. John Underhill, who fought with the Queen’s forces is Holland. A white pheasant feather on his helmet denoted his rank. The average militiaman would have carried his field piece, a smoothbore musket, and a long combat knife.

The East Regiment was eventually reformed and included the Lexington Company; that unit was present at Lexington Green, on 19 APR 1775. Later, they became the 8th Infantry, Massachusetts Volunteers; that unit saw action during the Civil War.

Again, in 1898, the unit served as Eighth Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry, U.S. Volunteers; it saw service in Cuba in 1898 and 1899. The regiment served in the Carolinas during the last half of World War 1, and was designated the It was re-designated 101st Combat Engineers in 1921.

Today, the First Muster is commemorated each year on April 19th, the anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord, fittingly named Patriots Day. The 101st Engineer Battalion, MAARNG, continues the East Regiment’s proud heritage of 370 years of service as seen here, parading before deployment to Kosovo.
