A Son’s Past Deeds Come Back To Bite Huckabee
NEWSWEEK ^ | Dec 15, 2007 | Michael Isikoff and Holly Bailey

Posted on 12/17/2007 1:46:43 PM PST by Aristotelian

As Mike Huckabee gains in the polls, the former Arkansas governor is finding that his record in office is getting more scrutiny. One issue likely to get attention is his handling of a sensitive family matter: allegations that one of his sons was involved in the hanging of a stray dog at a Boy Scout camp in 1998.

The incident led to the dismissal of David Huckabee, then 17, from his job as a counselor at Camp Pioneer in Hatfield, Ark. It also prompted the local prosecuting attorney— bombarded with complaints generated by a national animal-rights group—to write a letter to the Arkansas state police seeking help investigating whether David and another teenager had violated state animal-cruelty laws.

The state police never granted the request, and no charges were ever filed. But John Bailey, then the director of Arkansas's state police, tells NEWSWEEK that Governor Huckabee's chief of staff and personal lawyer both leaned on him to write a letter officially denying the local prosecutor's request.

Bailey, a career officer who had been appointed chief by Huckabee's Democratic predecessor, said he viewed the lawyer's intervention as improper and terminated the conversation. Seven months later, he was called into Huckabee's office and fired.

"I've lost confidence in your ability to do your job," Bailey says Huckabee told him. One reason Huckabee cited was "I couldn't get you to help me with my son when I had that problem," according to Bailey.

"Without question, [Huckabee] was making a conscious attempt to keep the state police from investigating his son," says I. C. Smith, the former FBI chief in Little Rock, who worked closely with Bailey and called him a "courageous" and "very solid" professional.

Tell me again why Romney's past pro-abortion & other liberal deeds are not supposed to haunt him, but somebody else's deeds other than a POTUS candidate is supposed to come back & haunt said candidate?

THe crime, a 17 year old young male hanging a dog, is pretty damn terrible.

Agreed.

Just do the math...the bad news about Huckster is piling up faster than the snow we got here yesterday. The more of this stuff that comes out, the more Huck looks like the conniving fraud he is and don’t tell me he isn’t because I looked at that guy months ago and knew something was wrong about him.

Kinda like that picture of Junior posted at the top of this thread. Something so not right.

I sure hope GOP primary voters are paying attention to all the dirt coming out about the Huckster.

I am. But this particular piece is about his son, not about Huck.

There's plenty of things we can say about Huck's positions on the issues. We don't need to bring up the wrongs done by his family members. . .particularly wrongs done when they were kids.

Mike messed up - big time. He used his power to protect his violent criminal son from the law. We don’t need that kind of crap in the white house!

More recent trouble, according to a Google search on him:

David Huckabee, 26, the son of former Gov. Mike Huckabee, was arrested early Thursday morning for allegedly attempting to board an airplane with a handgun at Little Rock National Airport.

And he looks more like he should be Giuliani's kid, LOL!

Perhaps so, and Huck will melt faster than that snow. But all the attacks so far seem to just bolster the guy. And this story about his kid, just strikes me as petty nit-picking.

It's very much about the Huckster, as he used his influence to cover it up and kill the investigation.

I recently switched my 11 year old Boy Scout from a troop full of nasty, foul-mouthed, hazing, cruel, and undisciplined boys to a more disciplined troop. My boy (Tenderfoot) is so much happier now.

I can’t believe some of the stuff that goes on in Boy Scout camp—and these are Boy Scouts; I can’t imagine what the average American teenaged boy would be like. I have three boys, all preteens and younger—I guess I will find out in a few years!

There’s no way in hell I’d ever vote for Dukakabee, but dragging this out is a little low.

Unless he hanged the dog because it caught it smoking and eating trans fats.

Yes. Cats live a long time.

Can’t someone find out if Socks is still with Betty, the secretary. Can we get a photo op with Socks?

I mean where is the investigative journalism on this?
