Huckabee Apologizes For Mormon Remark
CBS News ^ | Dec. 12, 2007 | CBS/AP

Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee says he has apologized to rival Mitt Romney for questioning whether Mormons believe Jesus and the devil are brothers.

On CNN, Huckabee said he told Romney "face to face" after today's debate in Iowa that he was sorry for the quote from an article to be published in Sunday's New York Times Magazine.

Huckabee told CNN that he had asked if Mormons believe Jesus and the devil are brothers because it was something he had heard, adding that he never thought his query would appear in the story. On NBC's "Today" show, Romney said "attacking someone's religion is really going too far."

Huckabee says he told Romney today that he would never make an issue of any point of Mormon doctrine, adding that the former Massachusetts governor's response "was gracious."

Romney's spokesman, Eric Fehrnstrom, told CBS News' Scott Conroy the apology was accepted.

Your ‘truth in advertising’ implies that Mormons aren’t allowed to claim to be Christians, ie, you seem to want them to admit they are ‘wrong’ to claim that.

LDS says other Christian denominations are "apostate". Below are some quotes:

Christianity was declared by Mormon president John Taylor to be... "a perfect pack of nonsense …a sounding brass and a tinkling symbol; it is as corrupt as hell; and the devil could not invent a better engine to spread his work… - Journal of Discourses vol.6, p.167."

Joseph Smith claimed that he was commanded in a vision of God and Jesus not to join any church:

"... for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: "they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof. - Joseph Smith - History 1:19."

In truth, they regard the Bible as unreliable and corrupted by apostate Christendom. One early Mormon leader stated,

"The Bible …is not the word of God, but the word of uninspired translators - Pamphlets of Orson Pratt pp.70-71."

Joseph Smith declared that the Book of Mormon is,the most correct of any book on earth …and a man would get nearer God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book. The Book of Mormon itself has this to say about the Bible:

"... for behold they have taken away from the gospel of the Lamb many parts which are plain and most precious; and also many covenants of the Lord have they taken away. And all this have they done that they might pervert the right ways of the Lord, that they might blind the eyes and harden the hearts of the children of men. - 1 Nephi 13:26-27."

“LDS says other Christian denominations are “apostate”. “

So what? Why are you posting something neither novel nor relevent? Every sect outside of your own considers your sect to be wrong. Evert sect has a beef with other sects (or they would join up). Quelle surprise.

- Would you want others to be denigrating your sect?
- Should a condition of tolerance of your sect be your sects acceptance of its definition by, say the Catholic Church?
- Should people of other sects consider your sect a bar to public office?
- Would you find it acceptable if people assumed your sect’s membership were untrustworthy and of bad character for being members?

In light of that, and in light of Jesus’ commandment to do unto others as you would have others do unto you, consider whether your treatment of Mormons and their beliefs is following that commandment. Consider the implications if we opened this up in politics; do you want Huckabee to be subjected to question after question on details of Baptist theology? What about McCain, Thompson, etc.? Fair? Whats the point? They are not running for Pastor. This is not a theology thread, its a political thread, and your comments might be appropriate in the context of a dialog/discussion on theology, but really has no legitimate bearing on the presidential race. It’s trivia. Or do you think Mike Huckabee was wrong to say that it should be off the table?

“He knows what the Baptist position and claims about Mormonism are.”

Maybe his recollection of those claims was vague. Or maybe he wanted to confirm them with a reporter who’d been researching Mormon doctrine. Or maybe he was using a rhetorical question to keep a comfortable conversation flowing. It seems absurd to believe Governor Huckabee could have wanted that question on the record.

When i first heard that Huckabee actually asked if Mormons believed that the devil and god are brothers, I was, to say the least, appalled.
I myself, are of no particular religion, but to bring up a candidate’s religion is just wrong. Especially when there are far more issues to be addressed.
At least he apologized, but should stayaway from asking religious questions.

Uh...if the apology was genuine, then is the article retracted? Or will it still be published? Just wondering.

Many sermons made by LDS former leaders contain 'errors'; at least that's what so many apologists say when these facts are presented, yet THEY continue to get 'published'.

Indeed!

I just HATE it when folks do this!!

And as I leaned up to the fireplace, mother inquired what the matter was. I replied, “Never mind, all is well—I am well enough off.” I then said to my mother,
“I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true.”

I like Mormons. My neighbors are Mormons. Some of the nicest people I’ve ever met are Mormons.

I don’t care what retarded stuff they believe.

Scientology is a newer religion than Mormonism...

Don't make fun of them,
they have a right to have
their moronic beliefs respected.

By this He was almost certainly acknowledging the sign or symbol of the planet Venus. Oh?

Because it is between the earth and the sun, it always appears near the sun in our sky and is only visible near dusk or dawn. Thus, to us it is an evening and morning star. No; it isn't.  for half of it's orbit it is on the other side of the sun.

According to Native American tradition, the cycle of Venus is like the life of the white, bearded god who visited them in the first century A.D.

Their legends are so similar to the account of the Savior visiting the Nephites, that there seems little doubt that they refer to Jesus Christ.(3)  Oh?

Venus is born as an evening star rising in the west, dim but growing brighter every day.

Several months later, just when it nears its brightest point, it dies, plunging quickly into the earth and disappearing as an evening star.

For several days it remains underground, fighting evil forces, until it conquers death and resurrects in the east as a radiant morning star.  HUh?

The parallels with the life, death, and resurrection of the Savior are obvious.  Oh?  They are?

...then they were impressed with the people in the church...

I guess the theology made not much of an impact.

Seems like you are trying to skirt the issue with Huckabee, which is what this thread is about, and what my question is about.

Simply put, I was just wondering if, as a sincere apology, has he asked the people at Times not to publish something where he mispoke and genuinely feels sorry about?

That's all, it is really a straight forward question

If he genuinely feels he did not mispeak, and is not sorry, then say so and go forward, straight forward, with the story.

But he also should not speak, IMHO, out of both sides of his mouth, and say to the one offended that he is sorry, while still allowing the very thing he says he is sorry for to be published to the world, most of which will not have heard of the apology.

But both the scriptures and the prophets affirm that Jesus Christ and Lucifer are indeed offspring of our Heavenly Father and, therefore, spirit brothers.

Ok...
