A team of international scientists has unveiled a mosaic map of Antarctica compiled from satellite images. The new map allows experts and laypersons alike to observe its majestic landscapes online and in stunning clarity.

The Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica (LIMA) is composed of high-resolution images taken from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Landsat 7 satellite between 1999 and 2001. It offers accurate, true-color images of the polar region.

That’s what it looked like 6-8 years ago. No way it’s still that big. Algor said so.

Um, that's cause the photographs were taken before 2001..

About two years ago, there was a very brief blurb on on of the NBC Today shows.

It said “Discoveries of artifacts in Antarctica could push back the discovery date by two hundred years”

Somewhat paraphrased maybe. But that was exactly what they were saying.

I immediately commenced a web search and postings related to people who visit Antarctica, and fired off some emails to NBC to find out more.

Nothing. No response from anyone. The whole incident totally disappeared.

Yeah, that’s where I got the numbers. I can tell I’m gonna have to break down and start using sarcasm tags.

Had to dig a little for the actual site, but here it is. Like Google Earth, only with a crappier interface. Still, could be interesting.

Beautiful! Thanks for the link. The bigness of space reminds me of how little everything else really is. Seriously --- I think we'll never really understand us unless we include images of ourselves from space in our philosophy [1].

But, but.....I don't see any palm trees in that photograph, Mr. AlGore.

Darn, I was going to book Antarctica for the next freeper tropical cruise.
